Under the self-financing scheme, some seats are filled by Director admission of eligible qualified foreign nationals, as sponsored candidates from their home countries.

The admissions to the undergraduate programme at Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) Varanasi are made through an all India competitive examinations known as Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted by the all IITs and ISM Dhanbad. It is considered to be the most prestigious examination of national importance at 10+2 level.

Like the rest of BHU, it is a residential and co-educational institute. The University campus is spread over nearly 1,300 acres (5.3 km2) at the southern end of Varanasi on the banks of the river Ganges.

The institute came into existence after the integration of Banaras Engineering College (BENCO), College of Mining & Metallurgy (MINMET) and College of Technology (TECHNO) in 1971. The admission for undergraduate students is through Indian Institutes Of Technology – Joint Entrance Examination and for post-graduates is through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). The Institute has so far produced more than 22,000 B.Tech. graduates, 2700 M.Tech. post graduates and 650 Ph.D. doctorates. Since its inception, the Institute of Technology, BHU has not only evolved to become a premier educational institution producing Graduate Technocrats and Entrepreneurs, but has remodeled itself into an educational beacon which provides versatile postgraduate training and conducts sophisticated research in Engineering and Technology
