The School of Law, Bennett University hosted its second edition of National Moot Court Competition (BNMCCC) from February 07 – 09, 2020 where the competition was on another level as 28 teams took part in the competition which represented the law schools of the country. AI Robocops, Automatic Cargo Trucks was the unique topic of this year. This problem was set by Advocates Swapna Sunder CEO, IP Dome Strategic Advisors and PVS Giridhar Advocate of Madras High Court.
What happened at the National Moot Court Competition?
Justice Gopala Gowda, former judge of Supreme Court inaugurated the competition and delivered a speech about the independence and accountability of the judiciary.
The problem at the moot court focused on the constitutionality of technologies used in the smart cities. It also focused on the practical issues which come while imposing civil and criminal liability on the corporate bodies that developed programs and software, fitted artificial intelligence equipment etc.
The teams that were present at the Moot competition had Advocates and Researchers which were chosen from their respective law schools who present written memorials. The teams had to go through the preliminary, quarter, semi-final rounds. The final round was judged by four eminent academicians and practitioners of law. The winners got the trophies and prize money of Rs 1 lakh.
How students benefitted from National Moot Court Competition?
Because of this event, the students got to know about the ways to organize a national event, mooting skills and a thorough know-how of the court room culture. This event paved the way to showcase the fast-growing academic wealth of BU schools to the visitors and judges. In this competition, the students found a good platform for networking professionally with peers and other famous people of legal fraternity.
A mock situation on Smart Killer Accident and AI Investigation was given to the students. The situation was given by considering the situation according to the year 2035 wherein, automatic cargo trucks moving at high speed hits school bus and AI Robotic Cops reach the crime scene and investigate.
Through this Moot Competition, Bennett University carved a niche in legal education and focused on the “Laws of Technology” which facilitated legal arguments that revolved around the field of Artifical Intelligence.
