How is AIIMS MBBS Rank and Percentile Calculate

The rank of the candidates is determined on the basis of percentile score. So, let us have a look at how the percentile score is calculated.

AIIMS MBBS Normalization: AIIMS MBBS is held online in multiple shifts. Hence, the percentile score is calculated via the normalization method. Normalization is done to determine the percentile of the candidates.

Difference between PERCENTAGE and PERCENTILE

One of the questions which students generally ask is how are percentage and percentile different terms.

Percentile is calculated on the relative performance of all those who appear for the examination and it describes that among all the people appeared for the entrance exam, what is your rank among them & where exactly do you stand.

For example, In a class of 100 students, you have topped the exam. So what this means is that your score is better than 99 people and hence your percentile is 99%ile. Again, if your rank had been 30th, that means your score is better than 70 people and hence your percentile is 70%ile.

The normalization procedure which will be adopted is based on Percentiles.

Next question is What is RAW SCORE? The score obtained on the basis of the marking scheme given by the exam conducting body is the Raw score. It will be used to determine Percentage score and Percentile and Normalization.

Step-by-step Procedure for Normalization and Preparation of Merit list for AIIMS MBBS 2019

Step 1: Distribution of Examinees in two days and in two shifts per day

The candidates will be distributed into four sessions randomly so that each session has an approximately equal number of candidates. In case of more number of days or more number of shifts, the candidates will be divided accordingly. These four sessions shall be as follows:

  • Session-1: Day-1 Shift-1
  • Session-2: Day-1 Shift-2
  • Session-3: Day-2 Shift-1
  • Session-4: Day-2 Shift-2

Step 2: Preparation of Result (for each Session)

The exam conducting body will prepare the AIIMS Result 2019 for MBBS in the form of Raw Scores,  Percentages, Percentiles for each of the four subjects (Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and General Knowledge), Total Percentile.

Step 3: Compilation of Score and Preparation of Rank/ Merit List

The Percentile scores for the Total Raw Score for all the four sessions as calculated using the formula given above would be merged. The Percentile of all the four sessions will be calculated separately for the Total raw score and the raw scores in four subjects.

The Next step would be to merge the results of all four shifts using the Percentiles of Total for ranking. In case if there is any tie, ie. candidates with same Percentile Scores, their tie will be resolved by applying few rules. The Final Ranking /Merit List will be prepared after using resolving ties.

AIIMS MBBS 2019 Tie Breaking Process

During the rank allocation, if the rank of 2 or more candidate collides then the AIIMS Delhi breaks the tie by using the below mentioned process:

  • First, the percentile score in Biology are checked and the candidates with higher marks are allocated higher rank.
  • If the tie still persists, then the percentile score of the candidates in Chemistry are checked.
  • However, if the other two method fails then the score in Physics are used.
  • Ultimately, the elder candidates are allocated the higher rank.
