Answer : On completion of the 4 year degree, one can start his career in Merchant Navy as a Marine Engineer.

Question : What would be my salary?

Answer : The starting salary for Junior Level Engineer is around 1000 US dollars which is equivalent to Rs.60,000/- per month.

Question : When can I become a Chief Engineer of a Ship?

Answer : An average intelligent person can pass various Certificates of Competency(COC) examinations and can become Chief Engineer within a short span of 6 to 7 years.

Question : What would be my salary as a Chief Engineer?

Answer : The Salary for a Chief Engineer will be around 5000 US dollars which is equivalent to Rs. 3 lakhs per month.

Question : Do I enjoy any tax benefit as a Seafarer?

Answer : Yes. If you stay outside India for 182 days in an accounting year (April this year to March next year), you will be treated as a Non-Resident Indian(NRI) .In such an event your entire salary is exempted from Income Tax [you do not have to pay any income tax].

Question : Do I have to sail throughout my life?

Answer : No. After 10 to 12 years the Marine Engineer can settle down at shore. A lot of opportunities exist for any Marine Engineer in:
Ports
Ship Yards
Heavy Industry
Ship repair yards
Maritime Training Institutes
Shipping companies
Hotels (5 Star / 6 Star /7 Star)
Hospitals

Question : How many RLINS students are already placed?

Answer : So far 1185 students are sailing in 122 ships in various Shipping Companies.

Question : Can I pursue higher studies?

Answer : YES. With Degree from BITS,Pilani most of the Foreign Universities / Indian Universities are willing to accept RLINS students for Post Graduate Courses. So far 30, students have either obtained Masters degree or are pursuing the same.
