How is the CAT 2020 Result Prepared?
The CAT 2020 result is prepared based on the performance of the candidates in the exam. However, the catch is that the raw score of the candidates is not mentioned in the result and it is not considered for admission. Rather the raw scores of the candidates are converted to scaled scores and then to the percentile score. The percentile score is used for admission. CAT 2020 percentile score is calculated for each of the 3 sections and for all the sections taken together, or simply the overall percentile.
How is the CAT 2020 raw score calculated: It is calculated based on the marking scheme of the exam which is +3 for correct answers and -1 for the wrong ones. There is no minus marking for the TITA questions.
Conversion of the raw scores into scaled scores: The normalization of the scores to scaled scores is done with the help of mean and standard deviation (SD). It is done in order to ensure fairness and equity in comparison of performances of candidates across different test sessions. It is prepared as explained above.
Now the percentile score is calculated: The steps described below are followed to calculate the CAT 2020 overall and sectional percentile scores obtained by a candidate. While illustrating the percentile score calculation process, the QA section is chosen as an example. A similar process is followed for the overall percentile score calculation and for the other two sections, i.e. DILR and VARC in CAT 2020.
Step 1: Calculate the total number of candidates (N) who appeared for CAT (i.e. including morning, afternoon, and evening sessions).
Step 2: Assign a rank (r), based on the scaled scores obtained in the QA section, to all candidates who appeared for CAT. In the case of two or more candidates obtaining identical scaled scores in the QA section, assign identical ranks to all those candidates. As an illustration, suppose exactly two candidates obtain the highest scaled score in the QA section, then both of those candidates are assigned a rank of 1. Moreover, the candidate(s) obtaining the second-highest scaled score in the QA section are assigned a rank of 3 and so on.
Step 3: Calculate the percentile score (P) of a candidate with rank (r) in the QA section as:
Formula for CAT percentile score (p) = [ (N – R) / N] X 100]
Note: IIMs round off the calculated percentile score (P) to 2 decimal points.
On the scorecard has the scaled score and the percentile score of the candidates and not the raw scores. The percentile score shall be used for admission.
What after CAT 2020 Result is Announced?
After CAT 2020 result is declared, those who qualify in the entrance exam can apply for admission in IIMs. Other than IIMs, there are other top B-schools which also uses CAT result for admissions to their management programmes. The shortlisted candidates will have to appear for Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion and Personal Interview (GD-PI).
Out of the 20 IIMs, it is expected that around 9 IIMs shall conduct a joint admission round, i.e Common Admission Process (CAP). There will be two stages in CAP 2021 – personal appearance round (PA) and final selection of the candidates. Once WAT, GD-PI is over, a Consolidated Merit List will be issued and published online at IIMs official website.
