Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2017 examination is the largest PG entrance exam in India. Taken by around 10 lac candidates, the exam is being conducted by IIT Roorkee this year. What is GATE 2017?
GATE is the single common exam that tests a student’s capabilities and aptitude in science. Specific to the subject, problem solving abilities and understanding is measured via the test. The IITs and IISc conduct the exam jointly each year.
Where can you get admission through GATE 2017 score
The score of GATE 2017 exam will be used to publish a merit list. On basis of the scores and weightage calculation, each candidate gets a final score and rank. This merit list is used in the centralized counselling (CCMT) for admission to NITs.
On publishing of the GATE 2017 result, candidate needs to apply to IITs of choice. Each IIT then publishes a list of candidates for further rounds of admission. This consists of written tests and personal interviews.
Meritorious GATE candidates are also given scholarships and financial aid.
State level counsellings are held for central and state engineering and science colleges. Most of the states in India, barring a few, take M.Tech Admission through GATE 2017. Details of state level counselling are announced shortly after the GATE exam is concluded.
How to get admission in IITs through GATE 2017
The main aim of most GATE test takers is to get admission in IITs. The most common question asked by GATE aspirants is What is the minimum marks required for admission in IITs? Now to answer this, you need to understand that each branch has its different cut offs. Also, the GATE score is not the final deciding factor. IITs only shortlist based on a GATE cut off. After that it depends on your performance in written test and personal interview. In a broad sense it can be said that a score above 600 is good. You must aim to score above 600 to get admission in IITs. (This is the final GATE score being discussed here.)
In the top IITs, a GATE score of 740 and above is required for most branches.
In GATE 2017, try to score more than 700. The GATE cut off varies each year. This depends upon the level of difficulty of paper, students applied, and intake.
GATE 2017 application form submission process and guidelines.
Application form of GATE 2017 is to be filled online. Over the past few years the registration process has gone completely online. Though initially students faced some confusions and problems, the GATE online application process has been accepted now. Instead of going over the trouble of purchasing forms from banks or standing in long queues, online application form is convenient and hassle free.
The application form has to be submitted online only. This includes submission of documents. Earlier applicants had to take print out of form and attach documents. This was then to be sent by speed post to GATE zonal IIT. However now, even this step has been eliminated. To avoid any confusion, all the submission is to be done online.
To be able to submit all relevant documents online, you need access to a scanner and internet connection.
Keep the following ready before entering the GATE 2017 registration.
Go to your nearest photo studio and have clicked a passport size photograph. Make sure that the photograph has a white or light colored background only. Do not wear accessories such as sunglasses in the photograph. Ask the studio to provide you the image in jpeg format, as well as standard 4.5 x 3.5 print..
Take a white sheet of paper and sign on it using dark blue ink. Scan it and crop it to dimension of 2 cm x 7 cm. Save this also as a jpeg image.
Keep ready the scanned copy of certificate from principal (if you have not yet completed graduation). If completed, keep ready scanned copy of degree certificate.
If you are applying under any category, keep scanned copy of relevant certificates.
The application fee for GATE 2017 is Rs 1500. This amount is non refundable. Female candidates and reserved category (SC, ST, PWD) candidates fee is Rs 750 only.
Step by step instructions to fill GATE application form 2017.
The form submission starts from 31 August 2016, and ends on 4 October 2016.
- Go to GATE online application processing system (GOAPS).
- Enter the GATE 2017 registration form.
- Enter basic details asked including name, mobile number, email ID, date of birth.
- Receive GATE user name and password on email and mobile.
- Use these details to log in to GOAPS.
- Complete application form.
- Upload photograph, signature, documents.
- Make payment online.
- Submit form online before last date.
Download GATE 2017 admit card.
After form submission, you will get one chance to request change in examination city. This facility will be available in GATE 2017 online portal up to 16 November 2016. After that the forms will be scrutinized to know which forms have been submitted successfully and fee paid. Against those, hall tickets will be published. GATE admit card 2017 can be downloaded online from 5 January 2017.
GATE 2017 exam dates are 05 February 2017, 05 February 2017, 11 February 2017, 12 February 2017.
