Chemical Engineering paper session – S3
Chemical Engineering paper time – 9.30 AM – 12.30 PM
Duration – 3 hours
GATE 2020 Cut – Off
Before moving forward, let us have a look at the expected cut off for the examination. As per the subject experts, the cut off for general category will be around 30 – 35.
GATE 2020 Chemical Engineering (CH) Paper Analysis
The paper was tricky and technical and can be only be solved when the concepts were clear. The chapter wise analysis is as follows:
CRE – The questions from CRE had more weightage in the paper. CRE comprises of the questions from selectivity, parallel reaction, activation energy, reaction reactor, non – isothermal reactors, non – ideal reactors.
PDC – From this section, questions of 4 to 5 marks were asked. The questions were framed from the topics like offset, two tank system, output question.
Fluid dynamics: This sections was easy.
Mass transfer: The questions from mass transfer ranged from moderate to difficult.
Mechanical operation – Both 1 or 2 marks questions were asked from this section and the level of questions was not too tough.
Thermodynamics, Heat transfer – These two sections were also considered easy.
Chemical technology – In this section, the questions were asked of 8 marks.
Economics – In this section, 2 questions were asked.

Chemical Engineering Previous Year Analysis
Let us also have a look at how the examination was last year.
Mass Transfer: As compared to this year, this section was considered easy by the students in the previous year. The questions came from the topics like absorber, extraction, minimum reflext ration, diffusion, drying, henry’s law
PDC – The questions were framed from the topics like phase margin, tanks in series, match the column (simple)
Thermodynamics – In this section, the questions came from mechanical equilibrium, extent of reaction, classical thermodynamics, pure substances.
Economics – In economics, the questions were asked from discounted payback, capitalized cost etc.
Fluid mechanics and mechanical operation – In this sections, the questions were asked from boundary layer, pascal’s law, pump, entry length, power number. This sections was considered easy.
CRE – This section was considered lengthy, moderate to difficult.
