IISC PhD Admission 2021
After the successful registration, selected candidates will have to appear for the interview process (In some departments written test will be taken as per the need). The final selection of the candidates will be based on the performance in the interview taken by the officials. The tentative schedule for the admission process is given in the table below.

Candidates who possess a minimum of second class or equivalent in the following degrees are eligible to apply:

For Research Ph.D. under External Registration Programme (ERP):
The educational qualifications will remains the same for the regular candidates also. Candidates who have qualified in one of the national entrance tests like CSIR-UGC NET for JRF, UGC-NET for JRF, DBT JRF, ICMR JRF, GATE, NBHM will be desirable but not mandatory. Further, the candidate should have completed two years of full-time employment in the current organization. The candidates must be officially sponsored by their employing organizations.
Note: The GATE score should be valid as of January 2021. Candidates securing the valid GATE score for the years 2018/2019/2020 can apply.
- NET JRF includes – CSIR-UGC NET for JRF; UGC-NET for JRF; DBT JRF; ICMR JRF; JEST; NBHM Screening Test 2019; INSPIRE.

Ph D in Interdisciplinary areas: Bio Systems Science and Engineering (offered by Centre for Bio systems Science and Engineering), Energy (offered by Interdisciplinary Centre for Energy Research), Mathematical Sciences (offered by National Mathematics Initiative), Nanoscience and Engineering (offered by the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering), Water Research (offered by Interdisciplinary Centre for Water Research), Cyber-Physical Systems (offered by Robert Bosch Centre for Physical Systems), Climate Change (offered by Divecha Centre for Climate Change). This interdisciplinary areas are given according to last year information.
IISC PhD Admission 2021 Selection Process
For Research Programmes [PhD/M.Tech (research)]:
Candidates will be shortlisted for an interview based on their performance in the National Entrance Test or the qualifying degree as detailed mentioned above. The selection will be based on the performance in the interview (in some of the departments, a written test will precede the interview).
For Integrated PhD Programmes:
Candidates will be shortlisted for interview based on their JAM 2020 score for all the four disciplines and also JEST 2020 for Physical Sciences. Selection for different discipline is given as under:
- (a) Chemical Sciences is based on the performance in the Interview
- (b) Biological, Physical and Mathematical Sciences is based on combined performance in the qualifying examination and interview.
For Research PhD under External Registration Programme (ERP):
The selection in the Ph.D. program under External Registration Programme will be based on the performance in an interview. Candidates are advised to prepare well for the interview process.
