Is IISc better than IIT? How hard is it to get into IISc? Where is IISc? How many IISc are there in India?

These are some of the questions that students across India are seen to be asking every year.

In India, lakhs of students slog away day and night for admission to the IITs – names they have heard from their parents, friends over the years. Then suddenly one day they see IISc in the list of top colleges in various rankings. Take a look…

IISC Rank in India, Ranking in the world

Subscribe For Latest Updates

National Institute of Ranking Framework (NIRF) has ranked IISc at #2 in India.

QS World University Rankings places IISC at #183 in the world, #3 in India.

Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking puts IISC in 301-350 range worldwide, #1 in India.

Despite the rankings, why IISC is not as popular as IITs is a question much debated among students. The answer to that needs to be vast and in-depth. However for the sake of brevity, the matter can simply be put like this.

  • IISC is as popular as the IITs, in the academic circles. It is just not that much in the spotlight in media as the IITs.
  • When it comes to research, and scientific explorations, IISc has its unique place in the academia.
  • The number of IITs is 23, and there is only one IISC. So even if one IIT comes in news every day, the IITs automatically grab more spotlight.

Is IISc is better than IITs?

Before you seek answer to this question, take a look at this.

UG courses offered by IISC: 4-yr Bachelor of Science (Research Program) in Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Materials, Mathematics, Physics.

UG courses offered by IIT Delhi: 4-yr B.Tech program in Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering
Electrical Engineering (Power), Engineering Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Production and Industrial Engineering, Textile Technology.

See the difference? The courses offered differ vastly. IITs on one hand focus on technical manpower for the world, and IISC emphasizes on research and scientific advancement. Both the outcomes are interrelated, but the exposure one gets on these colleges differ on the basis of the same. So where you want to go, depends on what you want to do at the end of your graduation…

When you want to decide between IISc and IITs, you do not have to ask which is better? You have to ask what do I want to study?

So if you want admissions in the IITs, go ahead and apply for the JEE Main 2020, and then the JEE Advanced 2020. For IISc, the admissions are offered on the basis of these two exams, plus KVPY exam, and NEET 2020.
