Indian Law Institute (ILI) conducts Common Admission Test (CAT) known as ILICAT or ILI CAT for the candidates seeking admission in various law courses. Admissions are offered in Masters, Postgraduate Diploma and PhD courses in law through ILI CAT. The candidates who appear for ILICAT are selected on the basis of the various stages of the admission process. Indian Law Institute is located in New Delhi.



ILICAT exam is conducted annually for LLM and PhD admissions. Candidates who have requisite degree in hand can apply and appear in ILICAT exam.

ILICAT Eligibility


Candidates belonging to the reserved categories will be the relaxation in the marks of the qualifying examination by :

  • 5% for SC/ST
  • 5% for PH Handicapped
  • 10% for Kashmiri Migrant Candidates

ILI CAT Exam Pattern

For PhD Course

  • Time – 2 hours.
  • Number of papers – 2
  • After the admission test, the candidates will have to submit the presentation on the proposed topic on the date notified by the Institute.

For LL.M Course

  • Type – Objective-type questions
  • Topics – Research, Legal Reasoning and Comprehensions and Basic Knowledge in different branches of Law.
  • Time – 2.5 hours
  • Medium of a test – English.

The distribution of marks to the admission test and the Viva Voce will be as follows:

Part 1

  • Number of questions: 40 objective type
  • Marks: 40
  • Topics: English Language and General Knowledge
  • Marking scheme: +1, -¼

Part 2

  • Number of questions: 100 objective type
  • Marks: 100
  • Topics: Jurisprudence, Constitutional Law, IPC, Public International Law, Commercial Law (Contract and Specific Relief Act, Partnership and Sale of Goods Act), Law of Torts, Law of Limitation and Environmental Law
  • Marking scheme: +1, -¼

Part 3

  • Number of questions: 4 subjective type
  • Marks: 40
  • Topics: legal writing skills

Part 4

  • Viva Voce
  • 20 marks
