JEE Main 2020 Result: AIR and NTA Score
JEE Main 2020 AIR: So this how ranking is done in JEE Main 2020. The percentile score of both the sessions of January and September shall be calculated. Out of both the attempt, whichever will be the highest overall percentile score, that score will be used for AIR. The AIR is used by the NITs, IIIT, CFTIs in JoSAA counselling for allotment of seats.
Percentile score: The raw scores of the candidates achieved in JEE Main 2020 papers are converted into percentile / NTA scores so that the relative difficulty level in all the shifts can be neutralised. The raw scores in each of the subject and the overall raw score, both are converted into percentile scores.
Definition of NTA / percentile score: NTA Scores are normalized scores across multi-session papers and are based on the relative performance of all those who appeared for the examination in one session. The marks obtained are converted into a scale ranging from 100 to 0 for each session. The NTA Score indicates the percentage of candidates who have scored EQUAL TO OR BELOW (same or lower raw scores) a particular candidate in that session.
JEE Main 2020 Result: How is the NTA / Percentile Score Calculated?
To calculate it the formula is as follows:
Formula to calculate NTA score: (100 X Number of candidates appeared in the ‘Session’ with raw score EQUAL TO OR LESS than the candidate) / (Total number of candidates appeared in the ‘Session’).
Step 1: First of all, NTA calculates the raw score in JEE Main 2020. The raw score is determined on the basis of the marking scheme, i.e. add 4 marks for the correct answer and deduct 1 marks for the wrong MCQ.
Step 2: Once the raw score has been determined, NTA normalizes it into NTA score, using the formula above. The percentile score is calculated for each shift held on each day of the exam. For JEE Main 2020 September, exam 2 shifts were held on each day from September 1 to 6, 2020. Thus the percentile score of each candidate will be calculated as follows for each subject and overall:
Step 3: After calculating the percentile score for each shift and each day, overall NTA scores will be compared. The candidates with the highest overall percentile score will get the highest rank and so on. However, in case 2 or more candidates get the same overall percentile score, tie-breaking process will be used to determine the rank.
Preparation of the JEE Main 2020 Rank
Now when the data is available for overall percentile score of the candidates and the subject wise percentile scores of the candidates in all the shifts in each day, then AIR can be determined.
Step 1: Candidates who have appeared for both shifts, there final NTA score is determined. This done by taking the better overall percentile score out of the 2 attempts. the table below shows an example of this:
Step 2: More is the overall final percentile, higher will be the rank. In case 2 or more candidates get the same overall final percentile rank, then tie breaking is done. In such case, candidates are arranged in following order:
- Higher Percentile score in Mathematics
- Higher Percentile score in Physics
- Higher Percentile score in Chemistry
- Candidates older in age
This is how the final AIR is determined for JEE Main 2020.

Types of JEE Main 2020 AIR

JEE Main 2020 Cutoff
Another important aspect to know is that in JEE Main 2020 there are no cutoff / minimum marks to pass the exam. All candidates are assigned marks and ranks. The cutoff that is issued with the admit card is the minimum marks needed in JEE Main 2020 to be able to qualify for JEE Advanced 2020.
This year NTA has announced that. top 2,5 lakh rank holder of JEE Main 2020 will be allowed for JEE Advanced 2020. Thus the cutoff will be decided as per it. The cutoff is mention via the score card itself. Last year this cutoff was as follows:
|Category||JEE Main 2019 Cut Off|
|Common Rank List||89.7548849|
