Union HRD Minister recommends setting up of National Testing Agency which will hold exams. At present, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducts several examinations including board exams as well as entrances. CBSE exams are taken by more than 1.12 crore students every year.
It is becoming difficult for CBSE to hold exams at such large scale. For the purpose of lessening burden of CBSE, National Testing Agency will/can be formed.
National Testing Agency
NTA will have representatives from CBSE, UGC, NCERT, AICTE, HRD. A task force headed by Ex-IIT Director will constitute a seven member task force. The rationale for setting up the NTA lies in ensuring that multiplicity of entrance examination leading to stress on the students is addressed in a comprehensive manner by formulating a uniform entrance examination for admissions in different branches of higher learning.
What will National Testing Agency do?
To start with, it will conduct all India engineering entrance exam. Currently CBSE holds JEE Main which acts as entrance exam for NITs, IIITs, CFTIs and also as preliminary round for JEE Advanced held by IITs. There are several news reports on how Government is trying to work out a single engineering entrance exam. Like they introduced NEET to replace all state level medical entrance exams, there could be a similar engineering entrance exam on national level.
As a student, what should I know about National Testing Agency?
We suggest students to focus on exam preparation without any changes to plan for ongoing academic session. JEE Main and JEE Advanced are of course happening now. Whether or not they will get replaced will be made clear by the authorities concerned well in time for next session.
Is there any official website for National Testing Agency?
No. Right now you can keep track of NTA happenings through news and MHRD website. Indeed MHRD releases official statements including that of National Testing Agency on official website.
Role of National Testing Agency in Education in India
MHRD further suggests that NTA could play an important role in education system. It may look after outcome learning and outcome assessment.
We are keeping an eye out for more news on National Testing Agency. Also details of entrance exams that it may hold.
