Madras University Entrance Exam 2027: PG Admission, Dates, Process

There is no single Madras University Entrance Exam. The University of Madras admits students to its department PG courses mainly on degree marks, and some programmes add a department entrance test or interview. In 2026, registration ran from 25 April to 1 June and tests were held 8 to 18 June. The 2027-28 notice is expected around April 2027.

Is there a common Madras University Entrance Exam in 2027?

No. The University of Madras does not hold one common entrance exam for its PG courses. Under the 2026-27 rules, admission to most PG degree programmes in the University Departments was based 100% on marks in the qualifying degree. Only programmes open to students from several streams used 50% degree marks and 50% department entrance test marks.

Each department fixes its own test date, time and mode, and some also hold an interview. MBA (regular and self-supportive) and MCA seats are not filled by the university at all: they go through the Tamil Nadu single window counselling of the Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE), Chennai, which uses TANCET scores. The 2027-28 rules will be in the next prospectus.

No 2027-28 schedule is out yet, so the 2027 rows are expected months based on the 2026-27 admission; the 2026 rows are the official dates.

How to Apply for Madras University PG Admission 2027

You register online on the University of Madras admission portal and then send the printed form to the department that runs your course. In 2026-27 the portal was egovernance.unom.ac.in/CBCS2627; the 2027-28 link is expected to open with the next notice.

1. Read the prospectus for your programme’s eligibility, then open the admission portal (the 2027-28 link will be on unom.ac.in).
2. Fill in the online application for one programme. Regular and self-supportive versions of a course need separate forms.
3. Pay the application cost online through State Bank Collect (SB Collect) and keep the payment receipt.
4. Print the submitted application form.
5. Email a scanned copy of the form, the payment proof and your self-attested certificates to the department, and post the hard copy to the Head of that Department before the last date.
6. Watch your email and the department notice for the entrance test or interview date, if your programme has one.

Documents to send with the form: SSLC and HSC certificates, transfer certificate, degree mark statements, provisional or degree certificate, Aadhaar card, and the community certificate or proof of any concession you claim. Applications cannot be moved from one department to another.

Who can apply for Madras University PG admission 2027?

You can apply if you hold the bachelor’s degree that the prospectus lists for your chosen programme. The rule differs by course.

• Some programmes, such as M.A. Historical Studies and M.A. Anthropology, accept a bachelor’s degree in any subject.
• Others need a specific degree; for example, M.Sc. Cyber Forensics and Information Security takes Computer Science, Computer Applications or IT graduates, or B.Sc. Mathematics, Physics, Statistics or Electronics, or B.E. / B.Tech graduates.
• A few set a minimum mark, such as 55% (second class) at graduation for M.Sc. Botany.
• Final-year students can apply and send their last semester marks to the department within 7 days of their result.
• If your degree is from another university, you need an Eligibility Certificate from the University of Madras at admission.

Students from other states are considered under the General Turn, except SC and ST candidates. Foreign nationals and NRIs are exempt from the entrance test and have 15% supernumerary seats in every PG programme, and each department has two supernumerary seats for students from Jammu and Kashmir.

How are students selected for University of Madras PG courses?

Selection is by the department, on your qualifying degree marks and, for some courses, a department test or interview.

Seats are limited in each department, and the university can choose not to run a programme in a given year.

Which Madras University PG programmes had an entrance test in 2026?

The 2026-27 schedule listed 69 programme entries, counting regular and self-supportive versions separately: 66 had a written test between 8 and 18 June 2026, and 3 had an interview only. Some of them are below.

Tests lasted from 1 to 3 hours, and many departments posted a syllabus for their test on the same official schedule page. The 2027 list may differ, so check the new schedule once registration closes.

How to Download the Madras University PG Entrance Hall Ticket

If your programme has a test, you download the hall ticket from the admission portal; no hall ticket is posted to you.

1. Open the admission portal of the current year and click Download Hall Ticket (in 2026-27 it was on egovernance.unom.ac.in).
2. Option 1: select your programme (M.A., M.Sc., M.Com., M.Tech., LL.M, M.S.W. or M.Lib.I.Sc.) and branch, and enter the mobile number you gave in the application form.
3. Option 2: enter your application number and date of birth (DD/MM/YYYY).
4. Click Download hall ticket, then save and print it for the test day.

How will you know if you are selected?

There is no common Madras University entrance result or rank list. Each department publishes its own provisional admission list on its notice board, or tells selected students by email or phone.

1. Check the department notice board and your email and phone after the test or interview.
2. If you are in the first provisional list, pay the fee within 7 days online through SB Collect, and email and post the receipt to the department.
3. A second list is published for any seats left vacant, again with 7 days to pay.
4. Report to the department only when classes begin, with all original certificates for verification.

If verification shows wrong information, including a wrongly calculated percentage of marks, the admission is cancelled.

What fee concessions does the University of Madras offer?

• SC, ST and SC converted Christian students of Tamil Nadu in University Departments are exempt from tuition fees, whatever their family income; they apply through the Tamil Nadu Government UMIS portal after joining.
• SC, ST and SCA/SCC students from other states pay the fees in full and claim them back from their own state’s scholarship.
• Differently abled students get a full fee concession in PG degree programmes, except the refundable caution deposit and student insurance.
• Self-supportive programmes charge higher fees than the regular version of the same course.
