Upcoming Lateral Entry Dates

Expected and confirmed dates for the 2027 cycle appear here as soon as each board or university announces them.

No confirmed dates in the next 90 days. These are the next expected dates, based on previous cycles:

What Is Lateral Entry Admission?

Lateral entry means admission to the second year of a course on the strength of a qualification you already hold. A three-year diploma covers much of the first year of engineering, so diploma holders can finish a B.Tech in three years instead of four. In the same way, Class 12 or ITI students can finish a polytechnic diploma in two years instead of three.

There are two main types:

  • Degree lateral entry (LEET): diploma in engineering, or B.Sc, to the 2nd year of B.E./B.Tech; D.Pharm to the 2nd year of B.Pharm.
  • Diploma lateral entry: Class 12 (Science) or ITI to the 2nd year of a polytechnic diploma.

Lateral entry seats are mostly in state government, aided and private engineering colleges and polytechnics, plus some state and private universities. IITs and NITs do not admit students through state lateral entry tests. The degree you get is the same B.E./B.Tech that regular students receive.

Degree Lateral Entry Tests in Brief

AP ECET (held for APSCHE) and TG ECET (held for TGCHE) admit diploma holders, and B.Sc graduates with Mathematics, to the 2nd year of B.E./B.Tech, and pharmacy diploma holders to B.Pharm. WB JELET is conducted by WBJEEB for 2nd-year B.E., B.Tech and B.Pharm seats across West Bengal. PULEET is Panjab University’s test for 2nd-year B.E. at its engineering institutes in Chandigarh and Hoshiarpur. In Bihar and Jharkhand, the state combined entrance boards (BCECEB and JCECEB) hold separate lateral entry tests. In Haryana, HSTES admits B.Tech lateral entry students by entrance test rank and centralised counselling.

Diploma Lateral Entry Tests in Brief

DECE LE (BCECEB, Bihar), Jharkhand DECE LE (JCECEB), TG LPCET (SBTET Telangana) and HP LEET (Himachal Pradesh Takniki Shiksha Board) admit students to the 2nd year (3rd semester) of polytechnic diplomas in their states. These are the main options after 12th or after ITI if you want a diploma in two years.

Eligibility for Lateral Entry Admission

Every state sets its own rules within AICTE norms, so always read the 2027 notification. The broad pattern is:

  • B.E./B.Tech lateral entry: a diploma in engineering or technology, usually in a branch related to the course you want. AICTE’s general norm is at least 45% marks (40% for reserved categories), though states can set their own cut-offs and domicile rules.
  • B.Sc graduates: a B.Sc degree with Mathematics in Class 12, under similar marks rules. Not every state or college accepts B.Sc graduates, and some universities ask them to clear extra first-year subjects.
  • B.Pharm lateral entry: a D.Pharm from an institution approved by the Pharmacy Council of India.
  • Diploma lateral entry: Class 12 with Science subjects (usually Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics), or Class 10 plus a two-year ITI certificate in a relevant trade.

Final-year diploma students can often apply and show the pass certificate at counselling. Check each exam page for the exact rules.

Documents Required for Lateral Entry Counselling

  • Class 10 certificate (for date of birth) and marksheet
  • Diploma, B.Sc, D.Pharm, Class 12 or ITI marksheets and pass certificate
  • Admit card and rank card or scorecard of the entrance test
  • Domicile or residence certificate, if the state asks for it
  • Category, EWS or disability certificate, if claiming a reservation
  • Transfer and migration certificates, photographs and a photo ID

Lateral Entry Without Entrance Exam

Not every state holds a test. Some admit lateral entry students on merit, which usually means diploma or qualifying exam marks. Gujarat’s ACPC Diploma to Degree admission to 2nd-year B.E., B.Tech and B.Pharm is based on qualifying exam marks. Maharashtra’s Direct Second Year (DSE) engineering admission and Tamil Nadu’s engineering lateral entry admission have also worked on diploma marks in recent cycles; confirm the 2027 rules on the official portals.

Private and deemed universities often hold their own lateral entry test or admit on diploma marks for their own seats. Management quota seats exist in many private colleges, but no route guarantees a seat, so apply through the official counselling of your state as well.

How to Apply and Counselling for Lateral Entry

  1. Pick your state and course, then open the exam page from the list above.
  2. Read the official 2027 notification for eligibility, branch mapping and reservation rules.
  3. Register online on the official portal, fill the form, upload documents and pay the fee shown in the notification.
  4. Download the admit card and take the test (skip this step in merit-based states).
  5. Check the answer key and result, then register for counselling.
  6. Fill choices of colleges and branches, attend document verification and accept your seat allotment.

Counselling is usually centralised and runs in rounds. In many states, your diploma branch decides which B.Tech branches you can choose, so check the eligible branch list before filling choices. Seats left after counselling may be filled by colleges or in spot rounds.

Courses and Which Lateral Entry Route Is Best

B.Tech lateral entry is available in most core branches, including Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and Communication, and Computer Science or IT, usually matched to your diploma branch. Diploma lateral entry is offered in engineering branches at polytechnics.

If you haveConsider
A diploma in engineeringYour state’s B.Tech lateral entry test or merit admission
A B.Sc with MathematicsTests that accept B.Sc, such as AP ECET and TG ECET
A D.PharmB.Pharm lateral entry through tests such as WB JELET or ACPC Diploma to Degree
Class 12 Science or an ITI certificateDiploma lateral entry tests such as DECE LE, TG LPCET or HP LEET

The best route is the one in the state where you are eligible for domicile seats and where good colleges take part in counselling. After a lateral entry B.Tech you have the same options as any graduate: campus jobs, GATE for M.Tech and PSU jobs, or an MBA. After a lateral entry diploma you can work, or later move to B.Tech through degree lateral entry.

How to Prepare

Most degree lateral entry tests are multiple-choice papers on Mathematics and the core subjects of your diploma branch; B.Sc candidates usually get a separate paper. Start with the official syllabus, revise your diploma textbooks, and solve previous papers and timed mock tests. Use the question papers below for practice.

Previous year papers of lateral entry tests are the best way to understand the pattern and level.

Lateral Entry Admission 2027 FAQs

What is lateral entry admission?

Lateral entry admission lets you join the 2nd year of a course directly. Diploma holders and B.Sc graduates can join the 2nd year of B.E./B.Tech, D.Pharm holders the 2nd year of B.Pharm, and Class 12 Science or ITI students the 2nd year of a polytechnic diploma.

Which exam is required for B.Tech lateral entry?

There is no single national exam. Each state has its own route, such as AP ECET, TG ECET, WB JELET, PULEET, BCECE LE, Karnataka DCET or Haryana LEET, and some states admit on diploma marks. Pick the exam of the state where you want to study.

Can I get B.Tech lateral entry without an entrance exam?

Yes, in some states. Gujarat’s ACPC Diploma to Degree admission is based on qualifying exam marks, and a few other states admit on diploma marks. Private universities may also admit on marks for their own seats, but always check the official 2027 rules.

Who is eligible for lateral entry in B.Tech?

Diploma holders in engineering or technology are the main group, and many states also accept B.Sc graduates who studied Mathematics in Class 12. AICTE’s general norm is at least 45% marks (40% for reserved categories), but states add their own conditions. Check the exam page for exact rules.

Can ITI students take lateral entry admission?

Yes. Class 10 plus a relevant two-year ITI is usually accepted for lateral entry into the 2nd year of a polytechnic diploma through tests such as DECE LE in Bihar, Jharkhand DECE LE, TG LPCET or HP LEET. Direct entry from ITI to B.Tech is not the usual route.

Can I get into an IIT or NIT through lateral entry?

No. IITs and NITs admit to B.Tech through JEE after Class 12 and do not take students through state lateral entry tests. Lateral entry seats are mainly in state government, aided and private colleges and universities.

Is a lateral entry B.Tech degree the same as a regular B.Tech?

Yes. You study for three years instead of four, but the degree awarded is the same B.E./B.Tech. You can sit for GATE, apply for jobs and take up higher studies like any other B.Tech graduate.

When will lateral entry admission 2027 forms come out?

In recent cycles, most lateral entry notifications have come out between February and May, with tests and counselling in the following months. Expected dates for each exam are shown in the dates section on this page and update as boards announce them.
