Top Hotel Management Entrance Exams Explained

NCHM JEE

NCHM JEE is the national entrance exam for the BSc Hospitality and Hotel Administration programme at IHMs affiliated to the National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT). It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of NCHMCT. Students searching for the “IHM entrance exam” or “NCHMCT JEE” mean this test. If you want a seat at a central, state or private IHM, this is the exam to take.

IIHM eCHAT

IIHM eCHAT is the admission test of the International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM) for its undergraduate hospitality programmes across its campuses. It is a UG-level test run by the institute itself. Take it if you are considering IIHM alongside or instead of an IHM.

MAH BHMCT CET

MAH BHMCT CET is conducted by the Maharashtra State CET Cell for admission to the Bachelor of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (BHMCT) at participating colleges in Maharashtra. It is a state-level UG exam. It suits students who want to study hotel management in Maharashtra, especially those eligible for state quota seats.

AIMA UGAT

AIMA UGAT is a national undergraduate aptitude test conducted by the All India Management Association. Some private institutes accept it for BHM and other undergraduate courses along with BBA and BCA. Check that your chosen institute accepts UGAT before you apply.

CUET UG

CUET UG, conducted by NTA, is the common entrance test for undergraduate admission to central and many other universities. A few universities that run hotel management, tourism or hospitality degrees admit through it. Check the list of universities under CUET and each university’s course list before choosing subjects.

Most students take NCHM JEE and add one or two other tests as backups. Use this table to decide.

Hotel Management Entrance Exams Other Than NCHM JEE

NCHM JEE covers IHMs only. Outside that system, private hospitality schools and universities usually run their own admission tests or interviews, and some accept AIMA UGAT or CUET UG scores. State CETs such as MAH BHMCT CET fill seats in their own state. If you are unsure where to start, apply for NCHM JEE and one institute test so you are not depending on a single result.

Hotel Management Admission Without Entrance Exam

Some private colleges and universities admit students to BHM or hospitality diplomas on the basis of Class 12 marks followed by a personal interview. Management quota seats also exist at many private colleges. These routes can work, but check that the college and its degree are recognised before you pay any fee. IHM seats are filled through NCHM JEE, so there is no way into an IHM degree programme without it. No route guarantees a seat.

Eligibility for Hotel Management Entrance Exams

Hotel management is open to students from any stream. Science, Commerce and Arts students can all apply. The usual requirements are:

  • Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent from a recognised board, with English as a subject for most exams.
  • Students appearing in their Class 12 board exam can usually apply, subject to passing before admission.
  • NCHM JEE has an upper age limit, with relaxation for reserved categories.
  • Some state and institute tests set a minimum percentage in Class 12.

Rules change from year to year, so confirm the details on each exam’s page and in the official information bulletin.

Hotel Management Exam Pattern at a Glance

Most hotel management course entrance exams are objective, multiple-choice tests. NCHM JEE is a computer-based test with sections on:

  • English Language
  • Numerical Ability and Analytical Aptitude
  • Reasoning and Logical Deduction
  • General Knowledge and Current Affairs
  • Aptitude for Service Sector

Other exams test similar areas, and some private institutes add a group discussion or interview. Marking schemes, including negative marking, differ by exam, so check the syllabus page of your exam.
