Top Pharmacy Entrance Exams Explained
GPAT
The Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test is the national exam for M.Pharm admission, conducted by NBEMS. It is taken by B.Pharm graduates and final-year students. A GPAT score is accepted by M.Pharm colleges across India and is also used for the AICTE PG scholarship.
NIPER JEE
NIPER JEE is the joint entrance for the National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, which are Institutes of National Importance. It admits students to master’s programmes such as M.S. (Pharm), M.Pharm and MBA (Pharm), and to PhD. Take it after B.Pharm if you are aiming for research or the pharma industry.
MHT CET
Maharashtra’s State CET Cell uses MHT CET for B.Pharm and Pharm.D seats in the state along with engineering. Students with either PCM or PCB can apply, since the exam has separate groups for both.
KCET
KCET, run by KEA, covers B.Pharm and Pharm.D seats in Karnataka government and private colleges. It is the main route for Karnataka students after Class 12.
AP EAPCET and TG EAPCET
Andhra Pradesh and Telangana admit B.Pharm and Pharm.D students through their EAPCET exams. B.Pharm seats are generally open to both the engineering (MPC) and the agriculture and pharmacy (BiPC) streams, so check the counselling rules on each page.
BITSAT
BITSAT is the BITS Pilani admission test. Its score is used for B.Pharm at BITS campuses as well as engineering. It suits students who want a private national-level institute.
CG PPHT
The Chhattisgarh Pre Pharmacy Test is conducted by CG Vyapam for B.Pharm admission in the state. It is one of the few state tests held only for pharmacy.

D.Pharm and Pharm.D Entrance Exams
D.Pharm Entrance Exam
D.Pharm is a two-year diploma that qualifies you to register as a pharmacist. Most states fill D.Pharm seats on Class 12 merit through counselling, and only a few hold a separate entrance test. Check your state’s technical education or pharmacy admission notice for the year.
Pharm.D Entrance Exam
Pharm.D is a six-year clinical pharmacy course after Class 12. There is no separate national Pharm.D exam. Seats are filled through state CETs such as KCET and the EAPCETs, or by the college’s own process. B.Pharm graduates can instead take the three-year Pharm.D (Post Baccalaureate) course, filled through state PG admissions such as Karnataka M.Pharm Pharm.D.
B.Pharm Admission Without Entrance Exam
Yes, it is possible in some cases. Many private colleges and some state universities admit B.Pharm students on Class 12 marks, especially in states without a pharmacy CET. Seats left vacant after CET counselling are also often filled on merit, and private colleges have a management quota.
Be careful, though. The college must be approved by the Pharmacy Council of India for the current year, or you may not be able to register as a pharmacist later. No entrance does not mean a guaranteed seat, and fees in management quota are usually higher.
Eligibility for Pharmacy Entrance Exams
- B.Pharm and Pharm.D: Class 12 with Physics and Chemistry plus Biology or Mathematics. Both PCB and PCM students are eligible. Minimum marks are typically in the 45 to 50 percent range, with relaxation for reserved categories.
- D.Pharm: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Mathematics.
- Lateral entry B.Pharm: D.Pharm holders can usually join directly in the second year.
- M.Pharm (GPAT) and NIPER JEE: a B.Pharm degree from a PCI-approved college; final-year students can generally apply.
Exact rules differ by exam, so always read the eligibility section on each exam’s page before applying.
How to Prepare for a Pharmacy Entrance Exam
- After Class 12: state CETs ask Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Maths from the Class 11 and 12 syllabus. NCERT books cover most of it.
- For GPAT and NIPER JEE: revise B.Pharm subjects, mainly pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology, pharmacognosy and pharmaceutical analysis. NIPER JEE also tests general aptitude.
- Use past papers: solve previous question papers under a timer to learn the pattern and the topics that repeat.
- Track dates: many state exams open forms around the same time, so keep the dates above in view.
