A common entrance exam 2027 lets you apply to many courses or colleges with a single test score, instead of sitting a separate paper for every university. The biggest is CUET, run by the National Testing Agency for UG and PG admission, but many universities and states also run their own common tests.

Top Common Entrance Exams Explained

Most students only need to understand a handful of these tests. Here is what each major one is for and who should take it.

CUET UG

The Common University Entrance Test (UG), conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), is the main route into undergraduate courses at central universities such as Delhi University, BHU and JNU. Many state, deemed and private universities also accept its scores. It tests languages, domain subjects and general aptitude, and you pick the subjects your target courses require. Any Class 12 student aiming for a BA, B.Sc, B.Com, BBA or similar course at a central university should take it. See CUET UG 2027 and the list of universities under CUET.

CUET PG

CUET PG, also conducted by NTA, is the common test for MA, M.Sc, M.Com and other postgraduate courses at central universities and many other participating universities. You take the paper that matches the PG course you want, so check each university’s paper requirement before applying. It suits final-year graduates and graduates planning a regular PG degree. CUSAT CAT

The Common Admission Test of Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) in Kerala is used for admission to several of its programmes, including B.Tech and integrated courses. It is a single-university test, but students from across India can apply. Course-wise eligibility differs, so read the prospectus on the CUSAT CAT 2027 page.

LPUNEST

LPUNEST is the national entrance and scholarship test of Lovely Professional University (LPU), Punjab. It is used for admission to many of LPU’s UG and PG programmes and for its scholarships. Students considering a large private university should look at it alongside their main exam. See LPUNEST 2027.

CUCET (Chandigarh University)

CUCET today refers to the Chandigarh University Common Entrance Test, used for admission and scholarships at Chandigarh University, Punjab. Do not confuse it with the old Central Universities Common Entrance Test, which was also called CUCET and was replaced by CUET in 2022. Details are on CUCET 2027.

AMU Entrance Exam

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) conducts its own admission tests for many of its courses, from school-level classes to UG and PG programmes. The admission route can differ from course to course, so confirm it in the latest AMU prospectus. See AMU Entrance Exam 2027.

JMI Entrance Exam

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), New Delhi, conducts its own entrance tests for many programmes and admits students to some UG courses through CUET scores. If you are targeting Jamia, check which route applies to your course in the university prospectus. Details are on JMI Entrance Exam 2027.

Symbiosis SET

The Symbiosis Entrance Test (SET) is conducted by Symbiosis International (Deemed University) for undergraduate programmes at its institutes. Some Symbiosis courses, such as law, have their own separate test. See SET 2027.

Which Common Entrance Exam After 12th?

The right test depends on the course and the type of university you want. Use this table as a starting point, then check eligibility on each exam page.

Most students write more than one exam, for example CUET UG plus one private university test, so that they have a backup option.

PG Entrance Exams 2027 After Graduation

For a master’s degree, the PG entrance exam you need depends on the university:

Central universities: CUET PG is the main test for MA, M.Sc, M.Com and similar courses.
State common PG tests: some states run one test for PG seats across their universities, such as AP PGCET in Andhra Pradesh, TG CPGET in Telangana and Odisha CPET in Odisha.
University PG tests: several universities hold their own PG entrance, for example PU CET PG at Panjab University, Mysore University PGEE, Madras University PG Entrance and GU PGET.
Specialised PG courses: M.Sc at IITs goes through IIT JAM, M.Tech through GATE and MBA through tests such as CAT.

Apply to at least one national test and one state or university test so that one result does not decide everything.

University Entrance Exams Other Than CUET

CUET is not the only route into a good university. Many institutions still hold their own UG entrance exams:

Private and deemed universities: KIITEE, Manipal MET, GITAM GAT, SAAT, BVP CET, V-SAT and PESSAT.
State universities: examples include CU-CET (Calicut University), KUET (University of Kashmir), JUET (University of Jammu), HPU Entrance Exam, DDU Entrance Exam and PUCET (Patna University).
Central universities with their own tests: AMU and Jamia run their own exams for many courses, and TUEE is Tezpur University’s entrance.

Some older university tests have been replaced by CUET. For example, BHU and JNU now fill their UG and PG seats through CUET; the BHU and JNUEE pages explain the current admission route.

BA, B.Sc and B.Com Admission Without Entrance Exam

Yes, you can still join a degree course without an entrance exam, but it depends on the college. Common routes are:

Merit-based state admissions: many state universities and their affiliated colleges admit on Class 12 marks. Some states run central online portals for this, such as DOST in Telangana, TNGASA for government arts and science colleges in Tamil Nadu and CENTAC in Puducherry.
Open and distance learning: programmes such as DU SOL admit students without an entrance test.
Private universities: some admit on Class 12 marks plus an interview, while others use their own test mainly for scholarships.

Merit lists depend on the number of seats and applicants each year, so no route guarantees a seat. Be cautious of anyone offering a “confirmed seat” for a fee, and apply only through the official college or university website.

Eligibility and Exam Pattern

Eligibility is set separately for each exam and each course, but the broad pattern is:

UG tests: you must have passed Class 12, or be appearing for it in the same year. Some courses ask for specific subjects, for example Maths for economics or Physics, Chemistry and Maths for B.Tech.
PG tests: you need a bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject, and final-year students can usually apply.
Minimum marks: many universities set a minimum percentage in the qualifying exam, with relaxation for reserved categories.

Passing the entrance test is only the first step. The university’s own course eligibility still applies at admission, so check both on the exam page and in the university’s prospectus.

Exam Pattern at a Glance

Most common entrance exams are computer-based tests with multiple-choice questions. CUET UG has three parts: languages, domain subjects and a General Aptitude Test. CUET PG papers are subject-specific. University tests usually cover English, reasoning, general awareness and the subjects related to your chosen course. Many of these exams have negative marking, so read the marking scheme in the official information bulletin before the exam.

How to Prepare for a Common Entrance Exam

Shortlist your universities first, then note which test each course needs and which CUET subjects it accepts.
For CUET UG domain subjects, study your NCERT Class 12 textbooks thoroughly.
Give regular time to language, reading comprehension and general aptitude, because these sections decide close ranks.
Solve previous years’ question papers to understand the level and the question style.
Take timed mock tests in computer-based mode, such as the free CUET mock tests on AglaSem Mock Test, and review every mistake.
Keep the last few weeks for revision and mocks rather than new topics.

What is a common entrance exam?

A common entrance exam is one test whose score is used for admission to many courses or institutions. CUET UG and CUET PG, conducted by NTA, are the main national examples, and many states and universities run their own common tests for UG and PG admission.

Is CUET compulsory for admission to central universities?
