State-Wise Polytechnic Admission 2027: Entrance Exam or Merit?

There is no single national polytechnic entrance exam. Admission to state polytechnics is run by each state’s technical education department or board, and the method differs. Broadly, states fall into two groups.

States With a Polytechnic Entrance Exam

In these states you must write a state entrance test, and seats are allotted by rank:

  • Uttar Pradesh: JEECUP, conducted by the Joint Entrance Examination Council, for government, aided and private polytechnics in UP.
  • Andhra Pradesh: AP POLYCET, conducted by SBTET AP.
  • Telangana: TG POLYCET, conducted by SBTET Telangana.
  • Bihar: DCECE, conducted by BCECEB, for engineering diplomas and some other diploma and certificate courses.
  • Delhi: CET Delhi, conducted by DTTE Delhi.
  • Jharkhand: Jharkhand Polytechnic, conducted by JCECEB.
  • Uttarakhand: Uttarakhand JEEP, conducted by UBTER.
  • Chhattisgarh: CG PPT, conducted by CG Vyapam.
  • Himachal Pradesh: HP PAT, conducted by HPTSB.

States With Merit-Based Polytechnic Admission

In these states, first-year diploma seats are filled on the basis of Class 10 marks through centralised online counselling, without a separate entrance exam:

For Assam Polytechnic, Punjab Polytechnic, MP PPT and JEXPO (West Bengal), check the exam page for the current admission method, as states can change from a test to merit or back. A state can also use merit for some courses and a test for others, so always read the 2027 brochure.

Polytechnic Entrance Exam 2027 Eligibility

Polytechnic After 10th

The standard route is first-year Diploma in Engineering after Class 10. You need to have passed Class 10 (or be appearing in it) with Mathematics and Science. Most states also set a minimum percentage and a domicile rule for state quota seats. Students in Class 10 in 2026-27 can usually apply and submit marks later.

Polytechnic After 12th

You can still join a first-year diploma after Class 12. Some courses, such as D.Pharm and certain non-engineering diplomas, need Class 12 in the first place. Class 12 (Science) or ITI holders can also apply for lateral entry into the second year of a diploma in several states, for example through DECE LE in Bihar, Jharkhand DECE LE and VOCLET in West Bengal.

Age limits, minimum marks and reservation rules differ by state. Open your state’s exam page and confirm before you apply.

How to Apply for Polytechnic Admission 2027

The process is online in almost every state and follows the same broad steps:

  1. Watch for the 2027-28 notification or prospectus on your state’s official portal. The dates block above shows when it is expected.
  2. Register with your mobile number and email, then fill in personal, academic and category details.
  3. Upload your photograph, signature and documents, and pay the application fee online. Fees vary by state and category; the exact amount is in the official brochure.
  4. For entrance-based states, download the admit card, write the exam and check the answer key and result.
  5. Register for counselling, fill your choices of polytechnics and branches, and track the merit list and seat allotment.
  6. Accept the allotted seat, pay the admission fee and report to the polytechnic with original documents.

Documents Required

  • Class 10 marksheet and pass certificate (Class 12 or ITI marksheet for lateral entry or Class 12-level courses)
  • Entrance exam admit card and rank card, where an exam is held
  • Domicile or residence certificate
  • Caste, EWS or other category certificate, if claiming reservation
  • Income certificate, if applying for a fee waiver or scholarship
  • Transfer certificate and character certificate from the last school
  • Aadhaar or another photo ID, and passport-size photographs

Polytechnic Seat Allotment and Counselling

Whether your state uses an exam or merit, the final step is centralised counselling. The admitting authority publishes a merit list (by entrance rank or Class 10 marks), and you fill choices of institutes and branches in order of preference. Seats are allotted over several rounds based on rank, category and choice, and you can usually freeze a seat or float for an upgrade in later rounds.

Government polytechnics charge much lower fees than private ones, and seats in popular government institutes and branches fill early. Several states and AICTE schemes offer tuition fee waivers or scholarships for eligible students; the brochure lists who qualifies. Private polytechnics in some states fill leftover seats through institute-level or spot admission after the main rounds, but never pay anyone who promises a guaranteed seat.

Polytechnic Courses: Which Diploma Is Best?

Through polytechnic admission you can choose a 3-year diploma in branches such as:

  • Mechanical, Civil and Electrical Engineering
  • Electronics and Communication Engineering
  • Computer Science or Information Technology
  • Automobile, Chemical, Mining and Metallurgy
  • Architecture Assistantship, Textile Technology and others offered in some states

No branch is best for everyone. Mechanical, Civil and Electrical lead to core industry and government Junior Engineer jobs. Computer Science suits students who want software, networking or IT support roles. Electronics fits telecom, automation and electronics manufacturing. Pick a branch you will enjoy, then look at which nearby polytechnics offer it with good labs and placement. D.Pharm is also offered through some polytechnic processes; see the pharmacy entrance exams page for details.

Polytechnic or ITI?

A polytechnic diploma is a 3-year AICTE-approved programme awarded by a state board of technical education, aimed at technician and Junior Engineer roles. ITI courses are shorter trade courses (usually one or two years) under the NCVT or SCVT system, aimed at skilled trades such as electrician or fitter. If you want a hands-on trade quickly, see ITI admission. If you want a path that can lead to a B.Tech, a diploma is usually the better choice.

After Polytechnic: Lateral Entry to B.Tech and Jobs

A diploma holder can join the second year of B.Tech or B.E. through lateral entry, saving a year. Each state has its own lateral entry exam or merit process, for example AP ECET, TG ECET, WB JELET and Karnataka DCET. See all of them on the lateral entry admission page.

You can also start working straight after the diploma. Engineering diploma holders are eligible for many Junior Engineer and technician posts in Railways, central and state government departments and public sector companies, as well as supervisor, maintenance and drafting roles in private industry. Check each recruitment notice for the exact branch required.

How to Prepare for a Polytechnic Entrance Exam

Most polytechnic entrance exams are multiple-choice tests based on the Class 10 syllabus, mainly Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, with some states adding English or general knowledge. The exact subjects, marks and negative marking differ, so read the syllabus on your exam’s page first.

  • Revise Class 9 and 10 textbooks (NCERT or your state board) thoroughly, especially Maths.
  • Practise algebra, geometry, mensuration and trigonometry daily for speed.
  • In Science, focus on electricity, light, motion, chemical reactions, acids and bases, and metals.
  • Solve previous years’ papers of your state exam and time yourself.
  • Keep the last month for revision and full-length practice tests.
