Is there an entrance exam for Tamil Nadu polytechnic admission 2027?
No. The Directorate of Technical Education (DOTE), Tamil Nadu does not hold any written test for diploma admission. It ranks applicants on the marks of their qualifying exam, applies communal reservation and fills seats in Government Polytechnic Colleges. There is no admit card, answer key or exam centre.
You apply once on tnpoly.in and choose one of these admission types:
- First Year Diploma, for students who have passed Class 10 (SSLC).
- First Year (Special): Renewable Energy or Digital Manufacturing Technology, also after Class 10.
- Second Year Diploma (Lateral Entry), for Class 12 pass students or Class 10 + 2-year ITI holders.
- Part-time Diploma, a 4-year course for working candidates with at least two years of full-time experience.
Sandwich diploma courses run for 3 and a half years (7 semesters) with in-plant training in industry. Half their seats go on merit like regular courses; the other half go to candidates sponsored by approved industries.
Tamil Nadu Polytechnic Admission 2027 Important Dates
The 2027-28 schedule is not out yet. In 2026 the application opened in early May with first deadlines of 25 May (lateral entry) and 30 May (first year), and the portal later showed 14 September 2026 as the last date, so the 2027 window is expected to open in May 2027.

How to Apply for Tamil Nadu Polytechnic Admission 2027
You apply online only, on the DOTE admission portal tnpoly.in. One application covers all the colleges you pick, and you rank them in order of preference. The 2027-28 form is expected to open in May 2027.
Apply Online for TN Polytechnic 2027
Applications for TN Polytechnic 2027 are expected in May 2027.
- Open tnpoly.in and choose Create Account. Enter your full name, email ID, mobile number, Aadhaar number, admission category (First Year, First Year Special, Lateral Entry or Part Time) and a password.
- Sign in with your email ID or mobile number and password.
- Fill the form step by step: personal, contact and parent details, school details, and your SSLC, Class 12 or ITI subject marks.
- Upload your SSLC (or qualifying) marksheet, permanent community certificate, special reservation certificate if any, and photo. Each file must be between 150 KB and 5 MB.
- Mark any special category (differently abled, ex-servicemen, sports), choose hostel and women’s college options, then search and select your colleges and drag them into order of priority.
- Pay the fee online, submit the form and note your application reference number.

The fee is worked out from the number of colleges you select, so 5 colleges cost Rs 750 for a general candidate. If you add colleges after submitting, you pay only for the new ones. Forgot your password? Choose Forgot on the sign-in page, enter your registered mobile number, type the 6-digit OTP and set a new password.
Who can apply for Tamil Nadu polytechnic admission 2027?
You can apply if you meet the qualifying exam rule for your admission type. These rules are from DOTE’s 2026-27 instructions to candidates.
- First year: a pass in Class 10 (SSLC) or an equivalent exam. No minimum percentage is set beyond a pass.
- Lateral entry (second year): a pass in Class 12 with any three of Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electronics, Information Technology, Biology, Informatics Practices, Biotechnology, a technical vocational subject, Agriculture, Engineering Graphics, Business Studies or Entrepreneurship; or Class 10 plus a 2-year ITI.
- Part-time: SSLC or equivalent (or SSLC + ITI), with at least two years of full-time work in the relevant field at a registered firm, industry or institution, and a job within 90 km of the polytechnic.
There is no age limit for any admission type. Seats are for Tamil Nadu candidates. For first-year admission, if you studied from Class 6 onwards in Tamil Nadu you need no residence proof; if you studied Classes 6 to 10 outside the state, upload a Certificate of Permanent Residence from the Tahsildar. For lateral entry the same certificate is needed if you studied Classes 8 to 12 outside Tamil Nadu.
Children of central government employees, and of employees of firms or institutions working in Tamil Nadu continuously for the past five years, can compete under Open Competition with an employer certificate. Candidates from other states who studied in Tamil Nadu from Class 6 are eligible for Open Competition only.
How is the Tamil Nadu polytechnic merit list prepared?
Your rank comes only from the marks of your qualifying exam, followed by communal reservation.

Higher qualifications do not add marks for part-time admission; only SSLC marks and service count. ST, SC, SC (Arunthathiyar), MBC/DNC, BC (Others) and BC (Muslim) candidates are also considered under Open Competition, in addition to their own reserved seats.
How are seats reserved in Tamil Nadu polytechnic admission?
Seats in every branch follow Tamil Nadu’s communal reservation, as shown on the portal’s selection list format.

Special reservation in Government, aided and self-financing polytechnics has its own application: 80 seats for children of ex-servicemen, 5% of seats in each branch for candidates with benchmark disabilities, and 3% of the sanctioned intake for eminent sportspersons. You submit only one special reservation application, and the Principal of Central Polytechnic College, Chennai selects candidates and allots colleges by your choices.
How will you know if you are selected?
DOTE does not publish one state-wide merit list or allotment result. Each polytechnic publishes the register numbers of its selected candidates on its notice board, and the Principal informs you by your registered mobile number or email.
- Keep the mobile number and email ID you used on tnpoly.in active until admission ends.
- Report to the polytechnic with your original documents and confirm admission within the time given.
- Ask the Principal of the college about tuition fees, scholarships, education loans and hostel seats; DOTE’s instructions leave these to each college.
What documents do you need for Tamil Nadu polytechnic admission 2027?
You upload scans while applying and show the originals when you join the college.
- SSLC marksheet issued by the education authority (a marksheet issued by the school headmaster is not accepted); Class 12 or ITI marksheet for lateral entry
- Conduct certificate and transfer certificate from the institution you last studied in
- Permanent community certificate for ST, SC, SC (A), MBC/DNC, BC or BC (Muslim) seats, issued by the competent authority
- Certificate of Permanent Residence, if you studied Classes 6 to 10 (first year) or 8 to 12 (lateral entry) outside Tamil Nadu
- Special reservation certificate (ex-servicemen dependant, disability or sports), if you claim one
- Experience certificates from your employer, for part-time admission
- A recent photograph
Producing a false marksheet or a bogus community or sports certificate is a punishable offence and leads to cancellation of the seat.
Which colleges and courses are covered?
The regular online application fills seats in Government Polytechnic Colleges. DOTE’s 2026-27 list names 55 Government polytechnic colleges and 4 affiliated institutes, such as the Institute of Tool Engineering, Dindigul and the Institute of Ceramic Technology, Virudhachalam.
Branches range from Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Communication and Computer Engineering to specialised courses such as Marine Engineering, Printing, Leather, Textile and Chemical Technology at the Tharamani institutes in Chennai. Separate lists cover branches in each college and the Government polytechnic colleges for women.
Part-time diploma courses run at 9 colleges, including Central Polytechnic College, Chennai and Government Polytechnic Colleges at Coimbatore, Trichy, Tuticorin and Nagercoil, mostly in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
