Srajan Garg was the Delhi topper in JEE Advanced 2014, with All India Rank 21. In an interview with AglaSem he explained how he prepared: 5 to 6 hours of study a day besides school, FIITJEE coaching, short realistic goals and mock tests in the final weeks. Here is his story, and how JEE Advanced 2027 differs from his exam.

How did Srajan Garg prepare for JEE Advanced?
He aimed at JEE Advanced from the start and treated JEE Main as a step on the way. “From the very beginning, my aim was to get a good rank in the IIT JEE exam,” he said. He felt he under-performed in JEE Main for that reason, and a low Physical Education mark pulled his board percentage down, but neither worried him.
- “The amount of time is not critical. What matters is how well you study in the time.”
- “I studied for 5-6 hours daily apart from school. In this time I made it a point to honestly study.”
- “I made short term and realistic goals. Once you set these goals, stick to it.”
- On school and travel: “They do take up time, but this has to be managed. I utilised my time well.”
Did coaching help him?
Yes, he found the guidance useful. “I did my coaching from FIITJEE in Delhi. The guidance was essential. They gave a very good outline to the study material and study plan, and the mentorship helped me,” he said. He added that how much coaching matters depends on the student, and he credits his family, teachers and friends for their support.
What was his revision plan in the last month?
He spent the weeks between JEE Main and JEE Advanced on tests and revision, because, as he put it, there is hardly any time left after JEE Main.
- Subject-wise revision of the JEE Advanced syllabus.
- Solving full mock tests.
- Practising from a test series.
What are his JEE preparation tips?
- Hard work is essential; give it your 100%.
- Knowing a topic and applying it are different things. To score high you must be able to solve questions on it, not just know it.
- Set realistic goals and stick to them.
- Stay motivated and do not give up.
- Take mock tests and solve as many JEE-level questions as you can.
How is JEE Advanced 2027 different from 2014?
The biggest change is the mode. In 2014 JEE Advanced was a pen-and-paper exam, and Srajan said he preferred paper because JEE questions often need diagrams. It is now held only as a computer-based test, so practise on screen with the official practice tests. The table shows the latest (2026) rules.
