Factors Affecting GATE Cut Off:
GATE 2020 is conducted for 25 different subjects and in single sessions as well as multiple sessions. The marks secured by the candidates in the papers of multiple sessions are then normalized which are then declared as cutoff scores for various subjects. The cut off for GATE is prepared keeping in mind the following points:
- Total number of candidates who appeared for the exam
- Total number of seats available
- The difficulty level of the exam
- Total number of applications received for the programmes in which candidates have to take admission
- Lastly, the category of the candidates will also be taken into consideration for the declaration of cut off.

How GATE Scores are Calculated?
The exam for some GATE papers is conducted in a single whereas, for others, it has been held in multiple session. For the papers which are held in a single session only, their actual marks are released and are used as cutoffs. However, for papers in multi-sessions, normalized marks are calculated corresponding to the raw marks obtained by a candidate and are used as the cutoff marks.
Calculation of GATE Score for All Papers
The score for GATE is calculated using the formula as given below:

As per the information brochure, the qualifying marks for the General category candidates is 25 marks (out of 100) in each subject or, µ+σ whichever is larger, where µ is the mean and σ is the standard deviation of marks of all the candidates who appeared in the paper.
Calculation of GATE Score for Multi-Session Papers
The calculation of the score for the multi-session papers is done on the basis of Normalization. Check the formula for Normalization in the image below.

The normalization is done on the basis of the fundamental assumption that “in all multi-session GATE papers, the distribution of abilities of candidates is the same across all the sessions”
GATE Cut Offs for IITs
Apart from qualifying marks, you may also want to know cut off in terms of opening and closing score to get admission. CCMT looks after admission to NITs, IIITs, CFTIs, all GATE cut-offs for NITs, IIITs, CFTIs are released by and at CCMT. Similarly, COAP looks after IIT M.Tech admissions.
