Preparation Tips and Recommended Books

  • Freehand Drawing: Practise daily sketching of everyday objects, human figures, plants, trees, furniture, and equipment. Pay attention to proportion, perspective, light & shadow, surface texture, and scale.
  • Geometrical Drawing: A Visual Dictionary of Architecture by Francis D.K. Ching; Engineering Drawing by N.D. Bhatt & V.M. Panchal. Practise plan, elevation, and isometric views of simple solids.
  • Three-Dimensional Perception: Architecture: Form, Space, and Order by Francis D.K. Ching. Practise visualising and sketching objects from different angles, sectional views, and rotated forms.
  • Imagination and Aesthetic Sensitivity: Practise compositional exercises with given primitives (circles, squares, lines). Study colour theory and harmony – primary, secondary, complementary colours.
  • Architectural Awareness: Read about famous architects (Le Corbusier, B.V. Doshi, Charles Correa, Zaha Hadid, Frank Lloyd Wright), iconic buildings (Taj Mahal, Lotus Temple, Sydney Opera House, Sagrada Familia), and Indian architectural heritage.
