JEMSCN Syllabus 2026 – Part A & Part B Topics, Exam Pattern (PDF)

The JEMSCN Syllabus 2026 has been released by WBJEEB in the Information Bulletin available at wbjeeb.nic.in. Candidates appearing in the Joint Entrance for Master of Science in Nursing on 07 June 2026 should refer to the prescribed topics for Part A and Part B to prepare effectively. Moreover, the question paper is set strictly from the B.Sc. / Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing syllabus listed in the official document. Therefore, an aspirant must complete every chapter listed and practise previous year question papers along with mock tests to score well in the 90-minute OMR exam. What is the JEMSCN Syllabus?

The syllabus is the official list of topics from which the question paper is set. Furthermore, the paper is based on the B.Sc. / Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing curriculum followed across the country. In addition, it is divided into two parts – Part A and Part B – with a total of 100 multiple-choice questions worth 1 mark each.

Before going through the chapter list, candidates should understand the exam pattern. In addition, this helps in planning preparation according to weightage. The structure for the offline OMR-based test is summarised below:

Part A Syllabus Topics

Below is the topic-wise breakdown of the Part A content. Candidates are advised to cover every topic listed in the Information Bulletin published by the Board.

  • Anatomy: Structure of the human body, major organ systems, regional anatomy, and applied anatomy in nursing practice.
  • Physiology: Functions of body systems including cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, nervous, endocrine, renal, and reproductive.
  • Sociology: Social institutions, family, community, social problems, and their impact on health and nursing care.
  • Psychology: Human behaviour, learning, motivation, emotion, personality, mental health concepts, and their nursing implications.
  • Microbiology: General microbiology, immunology, bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology, and infection control.
  • Pathology: General pathology, inflammation, neoplasia, cell injury, and pathology of major organ systems.
  • Pharmacology: Drug classifications, mechanisms of action, side effects, drug administration, and applied pharmacology in nursing.
  • Genetics: Principles of heredity, chromosomal aberrations, genetic disorders, and genetic counselling.
  • Nursing Administration: Nursing service organisation, management functions, leadership, supervision, and quality assurance.
  • Nursing Education: Teaching-learning process, curriculum development, evaluation, and educational technology.
  • Research & Statistics: Research process, research designs, data collection, sampling, descriptive and inferential statistics.

Part B Syllabus Topics

Below is the topic-wise breakdown of the Part B content. Part B carries 60 questions, making it the most important section for scoring.

  • Foundation of Nursing: Concepts of health and illness, nursing process, fundamentals of patient care, communication, documentation, and basic procedures.
  • Medical Surgical Nursing: Care of patients with disorders of cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, neurological, musculoskeletal, renal, endocrine, and integumentary systems; perioperative care; oncology nursing; critical care.
  • Pediatric Nursing: Growth and development, neonatal care, common paediatric disorders, immunisation, integrated management of childhood illnesses (IMCI), and child welfare.
  • Psychiatric Nursing: Mental health concepts, classification of mental disorders, therapeutic communication, psychopharmacology, psychiatric emergencies, and community mental health.
  • Obstetrical Nursing: Antenatal, intranatal, and postnatal care, high-risk pregnancy, family planning, gynaecological disorders, and reproductive health.
  • Community Health Nursing: Primary health care, national health programmes, epidemiology, environmental health, school health, occupational health, and health education.

Preparation Tips

  • Go through the complete Information Bulletin to understand every topic listed under Part A and Part B.
  • Prepare a topic-wise study plan giving more weightage to Part B since it carries 60% of the marks.
  • Use standard B.Sc. Nursing textbooks (such as Brunner & Suddarth, Lewis, Potter & Perry) as base references.
  • Solve previous year question papers to understand the type and level of questions.
  • Take regular mock tests to manage the 90-minute time limit and improve OMR accuracy.
  • Practise applying nursing process to clinical scenarios since application-based questions are common.
  • Revise short-notes regularly in the last fortnight before the exam.

What is covered in Part A and Part B of the paper?

Part A (40 Q) covers basic medical and nursing sciences such as Anatomy, Physiology, Sociology, Psychology, Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Genetics, Administration, Education, and Research & Statistics. Part B (60 Q) covers core nursing subjects: Foundation of Nursing, Medical Surgical Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, Obstetrical Nursing, and Community Health Nursing.

What is the marking scheme?

Each correct answer fetches +1 mark and each incorrect answer attracts -1/4 mark (25% negative). Multiple options marked are treated as incorrect. Unattempted questions get zero marks. The total is 100 marks for 100 questions.

Which part of the paper carries higher weightage?

Part B carries higher weightage with 60 questions, while Part A has 40 questions. Therefore, candidates should focus more on the core nursing subjects covered in Part B, which also forms the basis of the first tie-breaking rule.

Is the syllabus same as the previous year?

The Board generally retains the same chapter list year-on-year, with only minor changes if any. Candidates are advised to refer to the latest Information Bulletin available on wbjeeb.nic.in/jemscn for the authoritative chapter list.

Which books should I refer for preparation?

Candidates can use standard B.Sc./Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing textbooks for each subject. Recommended books include Brunner & Suddarth’s Textbook of Medical-Surgical Nursing, Potter & Perry’s Fundamentals of Nursing, Marlow’s Pediatric Nursing, and standard texts on community health and psychiatric nursing.
