NEET 2026 Cancelled: NTA Scraps May 3 Exam After Paper Leak Probe, CBI Inquiry Ordered; Re-Exam Dates Soon

NEET 2026 Cancelled: NTA Says May 3 Exam “Cannot Be Permitted To Stand”; Fresh Exam To Be Held

New Delhi, May 12: The National Testing Agency has cancelled the NEET 2026 examination conducted on May 3, 2026, after inputs reviewed with central agencies and findings shared by law-enforcement authorities raised serious concerns over the integrity of the exam process. A fresh NEET 2026 examination will now be conducted, and the revised exam date will be announced separately by NTA.

In its official press release dated May 12, NTA said that, with the approval of the Government of India, it has decided to cancel the NEET UG 2026 exam and re-conduct it “on dates that will be notified separately.” The agency also said the Government of India has decided to refer the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation, or CBI, for a comprehensive inquiry into the allegations.

The decision affects lakhs of medical aspirants across the country. NDTV, citing official data, reported that around 22.79 lakh candidates were registered for NEET UG 2026, which was held across 551 cities in India and 14 cities abroad at more than 5,432 centres.

NTA has clarified that candidates will not need to register again for the re-exam. The registration data, candidature details and examination centre preferences submitted for the May 2026 cycle will be carried forward. No additional examination fee will be charged, and fees already paid will be refunded to students, according to the official notice.

What NTA Said In Its Official Notice

The May 12 press release marks a major shift from NTA’s earlier position. On May 10, NTA had said the May 3 examination was conducted as scheduled and under full security protocol, while acknowledging that it had received inputs about alleged malpractice on the late evening of May 7 and had referred the matter to central agencies on May 8.

Two days later, after reviewing further inputs, NTA said the present examination process could not be allowed to stand. The agency stated that the re-conduct decision had been taken “in the interest of students” and in recognition of the trust on which the national examination system rests.

The May 12 notice further said that the re-conduct will cause “real and significant inconvenience” to candidates and families, but the alternative would have caused greater and more lasting damage to trust in the exam system.

Why Was NEET 2026 Cancelled?

The cancellation follows allegations of a paper leak and the reported circulation of a “guess paper” before the exam. According to India Today, investigators in Rajasthan were probing claims that a handwritten question set, allegedly circulated two to three days before the exam, partially matched the actual NEET UG 2026 paper. The report said around 140 questions, worth nearly 600 marks out of 720, were found to be similar to the circulated material.

The controversy first gained momentum after the Rajasthan Special Operations Group began looking into alleged irregularities around NEET 2026. NTA’s May 10 press release confirmed that it was aware of reports concerning action initiated by the Rajasthan SOG and said the matter was under investigation.

By May 12, the agency said inputs examined in coordination with central agencies and findings shared by law-enforcement authorities had established that the exam process could not be allowed to continue in its present form.

CBI Probe Ordered Into NEET UG 2026 Paper Leak Allegations

The Government of India has referred the matter to the CBI for a comprehensive inquiry. NTA has said it will extend full cooperation and provide all materials, records and assistance required for the investigation.

India Today reported that more than 45 people had been detained in connection with the paper leak probe, with the investigation extending beyond Rajasthan. The report also said a Nashik connection had emerged in the alleged circulation trail, though local police had not officially released full details at the time of reporting.

The CBI inquiry is expected to examine how the alleged paper material circulated before the exam, whether an organised network was involved, and whether the breach happened at any stage of paper handling, printing, transport, storage or distribution.

What Happens Now For NEET 2026 Candidates?

For candidates, the most important update is that the exam will be held again. However, NTA has not yet announced the revised date.

According to the official notice, candidates should note the following:

  1. NEET UG 2026 will be re-conducted.
  2. Fresh exam dates will be announced separately.
  3. Fresh admit cards will be issued for the re-exam.
  4. No fresh registration is required.
  5. No additional exam fee will be charged.
  6. Fees already paid will be refunded.
  7. Candidates should rely only on official NTA channels.

NTA has also advised candidates and parents to disregard unverified reports circulating on social media or informal platforms.

Will Candidates Need To Fill NEET UG 2026 Application Form Again?

No. As per NTA’s May 12 notice, candidates will not be required to undertake fresh registration. The registration data, candidature details and examination centres opted for the May 2026 cycle will be carried forward to the re-conducted examination.

This means candidates should not attempt to submit a new application unless NTA issues a separate instruction. Any claim asking students to pay a new fee or fill a fresh NEET 2026 form should be treated with caution until confirmed on the official website.

When Will NEET UG 2026 Re-Exam Date Be Announced?

NTA has not announced the NEET UG 2026 re-exam date yet. The official notice says the re-conducted examination dates and the re-issued admit card schedule will be communicated through official channels in the coming days.

Candidates should regularly check the official NEET UG website and NTA notices for the revised schedule. The new admit card is expected to mention the fresh exam centre, reporting time, exam date, instructions and other candidate-specific details.

Why NEET 2026 Cancellation Is A Major Development

NEET UG is India’s single largest medical entrance examination for admission to undergraduate medical courses, including MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and related programmes. The NTA information bulletin states that NEET UG is conducted as a common and uniform entrance test for undergraduate medical education in all medical institutions, and is also applicable for courses such as BAMS, BUMS, BSMS, BHMS and BDS under the relevant laws and regulations.

The stakes are extremely high because NEET directly determines the admission route for medical aspirants across government, private, deemed and central institutions. A cancellation after the exam has already been conducted creates academic, emotional and logistical uncertainty for students and families.

For many candidates, NEET preparation involves two or more years of coaching, school-level pressure, repeated mock tests, travel to exam centres and financial investment. A re-exam means they must stay in preparation mode for longer, while waiting for revised dates.

At the same time, authorities appear to have concluded that allowing a compromised or disputed exam to proceed could damage confidence in the admission system more severely.

Student Concerns: Delay, Stress And Counselling Timeline

The immediate concern for students is the revised exam date. A delayed NEET 2026 re-exam could also push back subsequent stages, including answer key release, result declaration, merit list preparation and counselling.

Medical admission counselling depends on NEET UG results. Any delay in the re-exam may affect the schedule for All India Quota counselling, state counselling and admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other courses.

Students are also worried about preparation fatigue. Many candidates had already appeared for the May 3 exam and had started calculating scores after the provisional answer key was released on May 6. The cancellation now resets the process.

NTA has acknowledged the inconvenience but said the decision was necessary to protect the credibility of the examination system.

What Students Should Do Until The New NEET UG 2026 Date

Candidates should avoid panic and focus on a short, high-yield revision plan until the revised exam date is announced. The preparation strategy should now be different from a full-year plan.

Students can follow this approach:

First, revise NCERT Biology daily, especially diagrams, tables, examples and statement-based concepts. Biology carries 360 marks in NEET UG, making it the most important section.

Second, solve mixed Physics and Chemistry questions to maintain speed. Since the re-exam will again test accuracy under time pressure, candidates should not leave numerical practice.

Third, analyse mistakes from the May 3 paper attempt, but do not assume that the re-exam paper will follow the same pattern or difficulty level.

Fourth, avoid relying on rumours about leaked questions, expected dates or fake admit card links.

Fifth, check only official NTA updates for the revised exam date, admit card and instructions.

NEET UG 2026 Exam Pattern Remains Important

As per the NEET UG 2026 information bulletin, the exam was scheduled for 180 minutes, from 2 pm to 5 pm, with 180 questions for 720 marks. Physics and Chemistry carried 45 questions each, while Biology, including Botany and Zoology, carried 90 questions.

Unless NTA issues a revised exam pattern notice, candidates should continue preparation based on the existing NEET UG 2026 pattern and syllabus.
