What is the NIFT 2027 exam pattern?
NIFT selection has two stages. Stage 1 is the General Ability Test (GAT), a computer-based MCQ test, and for design courses the Creative Ability Test (CAT), a 3-hour pen-and-paper drawing test. Stage 2 is a situation test for B.Des or a personal interview for PG courses. The table shows the latest (2026) pattern.
| Programme | Stage 1 tests | GAT questions and time | Stage 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| B.Des | GAT + CAT | 100 questions, 2 hours | Situation test |
| B.F.Tech | GAT Section A + B | 100 + 50 questions, 3 hours | None |
| M.Des | GAT + CAT | 120 questions, 2 hours | Personal interview |
| M.F.M | GAT Section A + B | 150 questions, 3 hours | Personal interview |
| M.F.Tech | GAT | 150 questions, 3 hours | Personal interview |
Each GAT question carries 1 mark, and 0.25 mark is cut for a wrong answer. The paper is in English and Hindi. GAT covers communication ability and English, quantitative ability, analytical and logical ability, and general knowledge, plus case studies for B.F.Tech and M.F.M. See the topics in the NIFT syllabus.
In the final merit list for B.Des, CAT counts for 50%, GAT for 30% and the situation test for 20%. For B.F.Tech, GAT Section A counts 30% and Section B 70%, and there is no Stage 2.
