The admission procedure consists of a written test in one of the many centres spread across nation which will be followed by interview of shortlisted candidates. Engineering students with good GATE score in examination of 2017-2019 in Electrical, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mathematics can apply without appearing for the TIFR Entrance Test. The link for GATE scored based application will be available on the official website. In case both the GATE and TIFR Entrance Test marks are submitted, the better of the two performances will be considered.

Eligibility Criteria


  • For Ph.D. : M.A./M.Sc./M.Tech.
  • For I-Ph.D.: B.A./B.Sc./B.E./B.Tech. (Students already having/completing an M.Sc. degree are not eligible).


  • For Ph.D.: M.Sc./M.S. in Physicsor equivalent, on completion of programmes(s) of duration not less than 5 years in total.
  • For I-Ph.D.:

B.Sc./B.S./B.E./ B.Tech./B.Chem. in Physics, Engineering Physics, or equivalent degree, on completion of programme(s) of duration not less than 3 years in total.

    • Any other degree in Science / Engineering / Medicine, or equivalent, on completion of programme(s) of duration not less than 3 years in total.
    • In addition,
      I-Ph.D. candidates with not less than four or more years of university education who clear the written test may be considered by TCIS for their Ph.D. program.


  • For Ph.D.: M.Sc./B.E./B.Tech./M.Pharm.
  • For Ph.D.: B.Sc./B.Pharm.
  • Candidates with B.E./B.Tech degrees can optionally get an M.Sc. degree by fulfilling necessary requirements.


  • For Ph.D.: Masters in Basic Science or Bachelors in Applied Science.  These include M.Sc.(Ag.), B.Tech., B.E., B.V.Sc., B.Pharma. (4 years course), MBBS, BDS, M.Pharma. Candidates will be short-listed for interview based on written test marks, CV and Scientific Writeup.
  • For I-Ph.D./M.Sc.: Bachelors in any Basic Science.
  • For Ph.D. Program in TCIS: M.Sc. in Physics, Chemistry or Biology.

Computer & System Sciences (including Communications and Applied Probability)

  • For Ph.D. : B.E./B.Tech./M.E./M.Tech./M.C.A./M.Sc. degree holders in Computer Science / Information Technology / Electronics & Communications Engineering / Electrical Engineering.  Exceptionally well qualified students with B.E./B.Tech./M.E./ M.Tech./M.Sc./B.Sc. or equivalent degrees in other disciplines may also be considered. Exceptionally well qualified students with B. Sc. degree in computer science and related subjects may be considered for I-Phd.

Candidates not holding a Master’s degree and admitted to a Ph.D./Int. Ph.D. program can receive an M.Sc. degree in some subjects by fulfilling prescribed requirements

 TIFR GS Application Form 2019

The candidates for TIFR GS Application Form 2019 need to submit online application at the official website. Candidates from remote areas with no access to internet can may send application request form along with a with a self-addressed stamped envelope. All others should submit online application only. Candidates can make payment for the online application by either through Demand Draft or Online Payment. For male candidates the fee is Rs. 600 and for female candidates it is Rs.100 only. Payment can be made online by Net banking/Credit/Debit cards or by Demand Draft drawn on State Bank of India. Students applying manually should send the DD along with the filled-in application form. Hall Tickets will be issued only after the receipt of the application fee.

TIFR GS 2019 Admit Card

The admit card for TIFR GS 2019 will be available to candidates for download from the official website. The candidates need to visit Student Login in wherein they need to provide their Username and Password in order to download their admit card. It is important to note that Admit Card is essential for entering examination hall therefore it is mandatory to have a print out.

Exam Pattern for TIFR GS 2019


  • Type of Questions: Objective type MCQ
  • Standard of the Questions: The questions will be based on the topics studied in the Undergraduate and Masters levels at an Indian University.
  • Marking Scheme: For every correct answer in Multiple-choice questions, 3 marks will be given. Whereas for the Numerical and Symbolic section, 5 marks will be given for the correct answer.
  • Negative Marking: There is a negative marking of 1 mark in MCQ section only.
  • Syllabus: Classical Mechanics; Mathematics relevant to Physics; Electricity and Magnetism; Quantum Mechanics; Heat, Thermodynamics and Statistical Physics; General Physics; Modern Physics; Electronics and Experimental Physics.


  • Type of Questions: Objective type MCQ
  • Number of Questions: 40
  • Duration of the exam: 3 hours
  • Marking Scheme: For each correct answer, 3 marks will be given.
  • Negative Marking: For every incorrect answer, 1 marks will be deducted.
  • Syllabus: The syllabus of the written exam is similar to the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degree course standard syllabus followed in an Indian University. The candidates can prepare from the topics such as:
  1. Physical Chemistry
  2. Organic Chemistry
  3. Inorganic Chemistry
  4. Analytical, electro and quantum chemistry
  5. Biophysics
  6. Thermodynamics
  7. Spectroscopy (NMR, fluorescence, IR, UV and X-ray), logic and statistics and mathematical method.


  • Type of Questions: Objective type MCQ
  • Syllabus: The test will cover basics only in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology. 

Computer & Systems Sciences

The question paper will be divided into three parts. Part A will be common to both the streams, i.e, Computer Science and Systems Science. Part B will be oriented for the Computer Sciences, whereas, Part C will be oriented for the System Sciences.

  • Duration of the Exam: 3 hours
  • Type of Questions: MCQ
  • Negative Marking: There will be a negative marking of 1 mark for every incorect answer.

Mathematics – The candidates who will be appearing for the admission to the various programs in Mathematics in TIFR, namely the Ph.D. and Integrated Ph.D. programs at TIFR, Mumbai and TIFR CAM, Bengaluru and Ph.D. at ICTS, Bengaluru, there has been a change in the exam pattern. The exam pattern is as follows:

  2. Type of Questions: Objective type MCQ
  3. There will be 25 true/false and 15 multiple choice questions.

TIFR GS Admission Procedure 2019

The admission procedure for TIFR GS Admission 2019 consists of two layers- entrance test and interview. The candidates who qualify in the entrance exam will be callled for interview which is expected to be held between February and April 2019.
