Part A – Topics

Part A of the syllabus covers a wide range of subjects to assess aptitude for design. The official topics specified by IIT Bombay are as follows.

  • Visualisation and Spatial Reasoning: Knowledge of practical and everyday mechanical and scientific concepts; visualisation and understanding of 3D shapes; knowledge of basic geometry and elementary properties of geometric shapes; visualising the inside, outside, top, bottom, left and right views of 3D objects.
  • Practical and Scientific Knowledge: General awareness of practical and scientific phenomena; observation of the natural and the man-made environment; awareness of common materials, tools and processes; basic principles of physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology applied to everyday objects and situations.
  • Observation and Design Sensitivity: Ability to detect concealed properties in everyday life and think critically about them; identifying and judging qualities of forms, colours, surfaces and tactile experiences; identifying the use of materials, tools, processes, technology, and emotions involved in everyday life.
  • Environmental and Social Awareness: General awareness of the environment, ecological balance, climate change, weather, geography; history of art, sculpture and literature; current affairs; cultural diversity of India; major events – national/international, places, industries, persons and organisations connected with art, design, science, technology and environment.
  • Analytical and Logical Reasoning: Ability to look at information either qualitative or quantitative in nature and discern patterns; weighing opinions, arguments or solutions against appropriate criteria; using logic and structured thinking to deduce from a short passage which of a number of statements is the most accurate response to a posed question; data interpretation; brain teasers; series; word play; situational and analogical reasoning.
  • Language and Creativity: Ability to understand passages in commonly used English language; ability to think creatively about alternatives and to think out of the box. Knowledge of vocabulary; usage of words; sentence formation; and association of words with concepts, objects or situations.
  • Design Thinking and Problem Solving: Ability to use visual analogies, metaphors, signs and symbols; problem identification, creative thinking and generation of innovative and unique solutions to problems for users involving products, interfaces, vehicles, communication, environments etc., keeping in mind aspects of universal design.

Part B – Topics

Part B is designed to test the candidate’s drawing and design aptitude. It is a pen-and-paper section that is evaluated only for the candidates who qualify the Part A cut-off. The Part B syllabus covers the following:

  • Drawing: Ability to draw products, people or scenes in proportion with good line quality, composition, proportion, perspective and shading. Drawing from observation and memory is included.
  • Creativity: Ability to think out of the box and come up with unique as well as diverse solutions, original and unconventional ideas, in response to given situations and prompts.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to articulate, narrate and convey ideas, concepts, stories or messages clearly through visuals as well as written language.
  • Analytical and Logical Reasoning: Ability to weigh opinions, arguments or solutions against appropriate criteria and apply structured visual thinking.
  • Problem Identification Skills: Ability to understand a given context for design (a brief), identify the user group and define the problem in design terms.

Note: As per the official notification of IIT Bombay, the above list of topics is indicative and may not be exhaustive. The exam may also include questions outside the listed topics, and not all listed topics need to appear in every exam.

FAQs – UCEED Syllabus 2026

Where can I download the official UCEED Syllabus 2026 PDF?

What are the main sections of Part A?
