Understanding CAT Result 2018 – What is normalization? How is percentile calculated?

Raw Score In CAT Exam:- Candidates can calculate marks obtained in CAT exam by using the marking scheme given below. This will be helpful in analysing exam performance and predicting percentile.

Marks scored in CAT 2018 exam =
(Number of Correct MCQ Answers x 3) – (Number of Incorrect MCQ Answers x 1) + (Number of Correct non MCQ Answers x 3)

Normalization of CAT Scores:- When an exam is conducted with more than one question papers, like in CAT exam (each slot had a different question paper), there are differences in difficulty levels. In order to ensure that each candidate gets fair scoring, raw scores are normalized. Normalization formula for CAT exam is similar to the one adopted by IITs for GATE exam. However exact formula is not available.

There are 2 steps of normalization in CAT

  1. Normalization across Slot 1 and Slot 2.
  2. Normalization across sections.

Converting Normalized Score to Percentile:- After scaled scores, percentile is calculated. Percentile rank represents the relative position of a candidate by seeing how many candidates have scored same or less than candidate whose percentile is being calculated. Formula for percentile is as follows.

CAT 2018 Percentile =
(Number of candidates who scored less than or equal to you ÷ Total number of candidates who appeared in exam) X 100.

CAT Cut Off 2018

What is cut off of CAT exam?:- Every B School that offers admission on basis of CAT exam has a different cutoff. However, there are no cut offs in CAT exam. That is to say that you do not need any minimum score to pass it.

What is section cut off?:- The minimum percentile needed individually in each section (DILR, VARC, QA) is the sectional cut off. Again, this varies from college to college.

What is a good percentile in CAT? What percentile do I need to get into the IIMs?:- Any percentile cannot guarantee you admission in IIMs. There are many students with low percentiles that have gotten admission in IIMs in the past, and many with high percentile who hadn’t. This is because IIMs consider other factors also while selecting candidates.
