How is the GATE 2020 Result Calculated?
Before the GATE 2020 Results are declared, the exam conducting body releases an official answer key for the exam. The individual result of the candidate is calculated using this answer key. The exam conducting body for GATE 2020 Exam conducts the exam for all 24 subjects in a uniform pattern. The scoring is done within a fixed parameter. The marks for correct answers are added to the score and the marks for wrong answers are deducted as shown in the marking scheme table below:

Cutoff for GATE 2020 Exam
A cutoff is prepared to determine a bar for qualifying marks for all 24 subjects. The cutoff is prepared according to the relative performance of all the candidates who appear for the test. The cutoff percentage is released after the GATE 2020 Result declaration

How to know if you qualify GATE 2020?
The exam conducting body releases a list of qualifying marks for all the candidates who qualify the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering on the official GOAPS website. The candidates can check from there if they qualify the exam or not.
The candidates can also see if they are able to download their GATE 2020 Scorecards because only those candidates who qualify the GATE 2020 exam can download them.
How to Download GATE 2020 Result and Scorecard?
The candidates can download their GATE 2020 Results from the GOAPS website from the day the result is declared. However, the GATE 2020 Scorecard is available for download from GOAPS website one week after the result has been declared.
Note: Only the candidates who have qualified the GATE 2020 exam are eligible to download their Scorecards.
The candidates may follow the steps given below to download their GATE 2020 Result and Scorecard:
Step 1: Visit the official GATE 2020 GOAPS Portal and log in by filling in details such as the Enrollment Id/ Registration Id/ Email and Password. Enter captcha and press submit.
Step 2: The candidates are then redirected towards their GATE 2020 Result/Scorecard.
Step 3: The candidates can now download the same and keep a printout of it till the admission/ recruitment process is complete.
Note: The candidates must note that the GATE 2020 Scorecard is valid for the next three years and can be used to take admission in higher education courses/recruitment.

GATE 2020 Marks v/s GATE Score and GATE 2020 AIR (All India Rank)
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India level exam conducted to test the subject knowledge and understanding of the candidate from the Graduation Degree in 24 branches of engineering and science.
The candidates are tested from a maximum of 100 marks and the marks secured by the candidate on the basis of the final answer key. These marks out of 100 are called Raw marks. Then the marks of the Candidates are converted out of 1000 marks and a scorecard is prepared through the process of normalization in case of multi-session exams and from Raw Marks in case of single session exams( explained below). On the basis of this score, an All India Rank of the candidate is declared.
GATE 2020 Score Normalization:
For the GATE 2020 Exams that are conducted in multiple sessions, a Normalized score is calculated using the formula given below.
It is done so that all the candidates are scored on a uniform pattern despite different question papers in different sessions. Because some question papers are more difficult than others hence decreasing the performance of students of that session. So to make the process smooth and uniform the process of Normalization is implemented.
Calculation of GATE 2020 Score:

What to do after you Qualify the GATE 2020 Exam?
The candidates have a plethora of options open after they Qualify the GATE 2020 Exam:
(A) Higher Education: The candidates can pursue M.Tech / ME/ MS in various IITs, NITs, IIITs, CFTIs and other state and private universities. All the candidates seeking admission in various courses have to follow the following procedures in order to apply for admission:
- For IITs – The candidates have to individually apply to all the IIT institutions they want to pursue M.Tech from and also register at Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP).
- For NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs – The candidates have to register for Counselling through the Centralized Counselling for M.Tech (CCMT) portal.
- For State and private universities- Different State and Private Universities conduct their own counselling process based on GATE Scores.
(B) Recruitment in different PSUs: Several Public Sector Undertakings use the GATE score to shortlist candidates for recruitment. The candidates have to apply individually to every PSU they wish to be placed in.
(C) Recruitment in Private Companies:
- Several Private Sector companies also consider GATE Scores as differentiating criteria for recruitment to various posts. The candidates have to follow other company procedures such as Aptitude Tests and/or Interviews in order to be recruited.

Ans. The GATE Score is valid for a period of three years for admission in Master’s Degree Courses, however, the GATE Score validity for PSU Recruitment is only in the current year.
