About 9,22,167 candidates applied for the exam out of which 85% or 7,87,148 sat for the exam and just 16% or 1,29,149 qualified last year. The data is a combined result including all the categories such as OBC, SC, ST, or people with disabilities. This percentage was almost similar to the 15% candidates who qualified in 2015 as well. Even though more candidates applied for last year, still only about 16% candidates qualified GATE.

The decrease in the number of candidates passing each year depicts the difficulty level. On contrary to that, GATE organising chairman said that at least 50% of the questions are easy apart form that he added that the qualifying marks are also not high. Even then the candidates are not coming up to that level.
