IIM Admission – Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) are the institute of national importance. In all, there are 20 IIMs in India. These institutes are public and autonomous in nature that is dedicated to management education and research. The flagship course of the IIMs is the PGP course that is offered across all the 20 IIMs. The admission in PGP course is based on the national level common entrance exam called CAT. The IIMs primarily offer postgraduate, doctoral and executive education courses. The admission process for these courses differ from each other and is available on this page.
IIM Admission

Admission Process of the IIMs
The candidates who wish to take admission in IIMs in various courses must check the admission process from the website of the respective IIMs. However, the admission process of the flagship course that is PGP course is the same in all the IIMs, which is via CAT.
Admission in PGP course is via CAT
CAT, expanded as Common Admission Test (CAT), is a national level entrance test that is conducted one of the IIM annually on a rotational basis. About 2 lakhs to 2.5 lakhs candidates appear for the exam each year to take admission in the PGP course offered by the 20 IIMs. The exam is held in online mode and the questions are asked from the following subjects:
- Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation
- Quantitative Ability
- Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension
The score of CAT is then used for the selection of candidates for WAT and PI. Final admission is granted based on CAT score, PI and WAT performances, educational qualification, work experiences, etc.
Admission in other courses
Admission in the other courses is based on different process as decided by the IIMs. The same is to be referred from the website of the respective IIMs. The admission process may include the following:

- Interview
- Portfolio
- Written / online tests
How to apply for Admission in the IIMs
Most of the admission process of the IIMs are independent of each other. The candidates must gather information from the website for this. However, generally, candidates can apply for admission using the steps below:
- First, visit the official website of the respective IIM
- Secondly, look for the course you wish to take admission in.
- Third, read the admission process and eligibility for the course and apply accordingly
Most of the application process in the IIMs is online, however, it is wise to check the eligibility and information bulletin before applying.
IIM Admission 2020 Eligibility
To know whether or not you are eligible for admission in the IIMs, you need to check the eligibility for the course you want to take admission in.
For admission in the flagship, PGP course of the IIMs:
- You need to appear in CAT and pass the cutoff percentile of CAT for the respective IIMs
- Check the minimum marks needed in the qualifying degree
- Check other important norms that might differ for all the IIMs.
For admission in courses other than PGP
- Check the age limit requirements
- Check the qualifying examination needed
- Check the marks needed in the qualifying exam
- Check nationality requirements
- Check subjects needed in the qualifying exam
- Check all other details for the course you are applying for
Reservation Policy followed by the IIMs
All the IIms follow the reservation policy that is as per the provision of the Indian Constitution. This includes:
- 15% of the seats are reserved for students of Scheduled Castes
- 7.5% for Scheduled Tribes
- 27% to the other backward classes (OBCs)
Different Generation of IIMs
As per the establishment of the IIMs, they are divided as the first generation, second generation, and third generation IIMs. The first generation IIMs are those that were established in the 1900s. The second-generation IIMs or the new IIMs are those that came into being between 2007 – 2011. The third generation and the baby IIMs are the ones that have been established in or after 2015.
