TIFR GS Exam Pattern for Mathematics
The candidates who are appearing for the admission to the various programs in Mathematics in TIFR, namely the Ph.D. and Integrated Ph.D. programs at TIFR, Mumbai and TIFR CAM, Bengaluru and Ph.D. at ICTS, Bengaluru, can check the new exam pattern below.
- Duration of the exam: The test is of 03 hours duration
- Type of Questions: There are 02 type of questions in the test which are Objective type MCQ and true/false questions.
- Number of Questions: There are 20 true/false and 20 multiple-choice questions.
- Standard of the test: It is mainly based on mathematics covered in a reasonable B.Sc. course in Mathematics.
TIFR GS Exam Pattern for Physics
- Type of Questions: Objective type MCQ
- Standard of the Questions: The questions are based on the topics studied in the Undergraduate and Masters levels at an Indian University.
- Marking Scheme: In case of MCQ type questions, for a correct anwer, 03 marks are given, whereas, for the Numerical and Symbolic section, 5 marks are given for a correct answer. There is a negative marking of 01 marks for an incorrect answer in MCQ type questions only.
TIFR GS Exam Pattern for Chemistry
- Type of Questions: Objective type MCQ
- Number of Questions: The entrance exam consist 40 number of questions
- Duration of the exam: The test is of 3 hours duration
- Marking Scheme: For each correct answer, 3 marks are given and 01 marks are deducted for an incorrect answer.
TIFR GS Exam Pattern for Biology
- Type of Questions: Objective type MCQ
- Standard of the test: The test will cover the basics only in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology.
TIFR GS Exam Pattern for Computer & Systems Sciences
The question paper for Computer & Systems Sciences is divided into three parts. Part A is common to both the streams, i.e, Computer Science and Systems Science. Part B is oriented for the Computer Sciences, whereas, Part C is for the System Sciences.
- Duration of the Exam: 3 hours
- Type of Questions: MCQ
- Negative Marking: There is a negative marking of 1 mark for an incorrect answer.

Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) conducts an All India level entrance exam, Graduate School Admissions (GS). The entrance test is conducted for admission in Graduate Programme at TIFR in subjects like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer & Systems Sciences (including Communications and Applied Probability) and Science Education. TIFR also conducts an entrance exam for biology called Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (JGEEBILS).
