What is CAT 2019 Normalization Score and How is It Computed?
By adding 3 marks for correct answer and deducting 1 mark for incorrect answer, raw score of CAT is calculated. However, since the exam is held in multiple sessions, IIMs use normalization method to calculate scaled score of CAT. The purpose of doing normalization is to ensure fairness and equity while comparing the score of candidates, who appeared for the exam in different sessions.
How is CAT 2019 scaled score calculate via normalization method?
The normalized score of CAT are calculated by using mean and standard deviation (SD). First, the normalized score of each section is calculated and then via it, overall CAT 2019 scaled score is determined.
IIMs have explained the entire process very well by taking example of QA section and we will do the same. Let us assume that:
- 100 candidates appeared for CAT 2019 morning session.
- 90 candidates appeared for CAT 2019 afternoon session.
Step 1 – Calculate raw score using CAT 2019 marking scheme.
- Let Raw score = R
Step 2 is to calculate standard deviation and mean of raw score secured by the morning session candidates.
Step 3 is to calculate the same for afternoon session candidates.
SD = S1
Mean = M1
G1 = S1 + M1
SD = S2
Mean = M2
G2 = S2+M2
Step 4 consists of calculating mean and standard deviation of the raw score, for total number of candidates who appeared in Common Admission Test 2019.
Here, Mean = M | SD = S | G = M+S
Step 5 next is to calculate the mean raw score of top 0.1% candidates in morning and evening session, individually.
- Mean raw score for morning session = MM11
- Mean raw score for afternoon session = MM22
Step 6 after all the steps above, the mean raw score of top 0.1% in morning and afternoon session is determined.
- It is denoted via MM0.1
Formula for calculation of CAT 2019 scaled score for a person who appeared for the exam in morning session
Scaled Score of a candidate = (R-G1) x M11 – G / M12 – G1 + G
Formula for calculation of CAT 2019 scaled score for a person who appeared for the exam in morning session
Scaled Score of a candidate = (R-G1) x M11 – G / M12 – G2 + G

What is CAT 2019 Percentile Score and How is It Calculated?

N – Total number of candidates who appeared for CAT 2019.
R – Rank assigned to a candidates, on the basis of the scaled score.
- If 2 or more candidates are getting the same rank while assigning then identical rank is assigned to both the candidates.
Formula for CAT percentile score (p) = [ (N – R) / N] X 100]
Note: IIMs round off the calculated percentile score (P) to 2 decimal points.
