GATE 2020 Form
The application form of GATE 2020 can be filled from GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS). To apply, the candidates need to register, fill details in the form, upload images, and pay the application fee. All of this is to be done via GOAPS.
GOAPS is a portal by IITs, where you need to create your account. In future, from GOAPS, you will able to download admit card, answer key, result, etc.
GATE Registration – The Registration is the basic step for making an account in GOAPS. To do so, following details are to be entered:
- Email ID
- Mobile number
- Password (this to be created and should have 1 upper case, 1 lower case, and 1 special character)
Fill Application Form: On entering the details, a unique enrollment id is created. With the id and the password, you can login and enter personal, educational, work, communication, subject paper, test center, and other details in the GATE 2020 form.

It is an absolute necessity to fulfill the eligibility criteria of GATE 2020. The criteria are age and education qualification and are as follows:

GATE 2020 Exam Pattern
The exam pattern of GATE 2020 is vivid but we have simplified it for you. It is as follows:
- Duration of GATE: The exam will be of 3 hours.
- Mode of Exam: Computer Based Test.
- Total Number of Question: The exam consists of 100 questions.
- Language: Question paper is only available in English.
- Question Type: Multiple choice type and Numerical Answer Type
– 15 questions in the exam are from from GA, whereas, 65 questions are from Subject paper.
– MCQ are those questions for which multiple answer options are given and 1 is correct.
– NAT questions are those questions which candidates need to solve and answer enter answer manually, with the help of virtual numeric keypad.
GATE 2020 Marking Scheme: Both type of questions are of 1 or 2 marks. For 1 mark question, negative marking of 1/3 marks is done and in 2 marks questions negative marking of 2/3 marks is done. However, it should be noted that there is no negative marking for NAT questions. It is only applicable in MCQs.

GATE 2020 Application Scrutiny and Rectification
Last year onward, the examination bodies introduced the provision of the application under scrutiny. The exam conducting body examines and verifies all the details provided by the candidates on the basis of supporting documents uploaded by the candidate after the application process is over.
- The scrutiny process is done by the officials for the accuracy of the data and the clarity of the uploaded documents as well.
- If any defects in the application form are found, the candidates are intimated via email/ SMS for rectification.
- A fixed time window is provided to the candidates to rectify their mistakes.
- If a candidate fails to rectify their mistake and upload corrected documents within the stipulated time frame his/her application forms are rejected.
- Once the correction window is closed, no further correction requests will be entertained by the authorities.

GATE is a difficult exam. No sugar coating the facts, the qualifying rate in GATE is very low. The average number of candidates appearing in GATE is 9.2 lakhs, for the past 3 years. However, the pass percentage remains 15% to 17%. Therefore you can imagine the level of preparation needed.

GATE 2020 Test Centers
GATE 2020 exam is being held in 209 exam cities in India and abroad. Out of the 209 exam centers, 6 centers are loacted outside India. The candidates need to enter the cjoice of their 3 preferred exam center in the application form from where they woulf like to appear for the exam. IIT D allots any one exam center out of those 3 choices most preferable the 1st choice. Thus the candidaes must enter the choice of their exam center in order of their preference.

GATE 2020 Admit Card
The admit card is available for download on the date specified as per schedule on the official GOAPS portal online. The candidates must download their E-admit cards and keep a printout of the same to be brought to the exam center on the exam day. The candidates must note that the GATE admit cards are not sent by post and/or any other means.
The GATE exam Admit Cards are proof of the candidate’s identity, giving them provisional eligibility to sit in the exam. The admit card is then verified with a valid government id by the examiner on the day of the exam. The GATE admit card is considered as valid if the photograph and signature images are clearly visible. The photograph of the candidate on the admit card should match the appearance of the candidate on the day of the exam.
Important documents to be carried to the exam hall
The candidates must not forget to bring the following documents to the exam center:
- A color printed copy of the Admit Card
- A valid Government photo Id Proof, which was specified during the filling up of the application form.

GATE 2020 Answer Key and Response Sheet
The GATE 2020 answer key and the Candidate Response Sheet is available for download at the official GOAPS portal. The candidates can also download the answer key by using their enrollment Id and password. Once the examination process is over, the exam conducting body releases the official answer key and response sheet of the candidates. Only the candidates who are present on the day of the examination can download the response sheets.
The candidates can cross-check and verify their own responses against the official correct responses and calculate their own Raw Score. However, if a candidate finds any issues with the answer key a challenge can be filed against the answer key.
Contest/Challenge against the Answer Key
Candidates who find any challenges against the answer key may submit their contests through the official GOAPS portal by using their login credentials. The contest window is provided for a very limited time period after the answer keys are released. The GATE results will be based on the final Answer Key only.
The candidates can file their challenge against a payment of Rs 500 per challenge. The fee payment for which can be made online using debit/credit cards and net banking.
GATE 2020 Result
The GATE result is calculated on the basis of the final Answer key published on the official website, once all the challenges against the answer key have been resolved. Candidates can download the result by using login id and password.
Then the raw score is used for computing the GATE Score. For the exams held in multiple sessions, the raw marks obtained by the candidates in different sessions are converted to Normalized marks. Therefore, raw marks are used for calculating the GATE score for single session papers. And Normalized marks are used for calculating the GATE score for multi-session papers.
Normalization of Marks
The GATE 2020 exam is conducted in multiple sessions for some subject papers. For such subject papers, the normalization process is applied to even out the difficulty level in all the different sessions and compute a score that is based on equal parameters. This is done to ensure that different candidates in multiple sessions do not suffer due to the question paper being a little tougher than other sessions.

The GATE 2020 Exam Result will be declared online on the official GOAPS portal as per schedule. The candidates will be able to download their results on the scheduled date of result declaration using their login details.
Downloading the GATE 2020 Scorecard
Only those candidates who score more than or equal to the qualifying marks are able to download their GATE Scorecards. The scorecards will be available for download online one week after the declaration of the results. The candidates are advised to keep a printout of their Scorecards for future procedures of admissions and/or recruitment.
Note: The GATE Scorecard is valid for a period of three years only.
GATE 2020 Cutoff
The cutoff for GATE is released on the official GOAPS portal once the results have been declared. However, the candidates can look at the previous year cutoff to formulate an idea of GATE 2020 Qualifying Marks:
GATE 2020 IIT Counselling
The candidates who qualify the GATE 2020 exam are eligible to appear for Counselling by individually applying to all the IIT institutions they want to pursue PG courses from and also register at Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP).
COAP registration is a part of the IIT counselling process. This portal is a centralized platform, providing the candidate with a choice of making a list of preferred colleges for admission in M.Tech. Programme in academic institutes of various IITs and IISc Bangalore who have participated in the COAP process.
The candidates have to accept the offers for admission made by the participating Institute, for which they have registered at COAP. The offer to the candidate is only made by the institutes for which they have applied individually. Each participating Institute follows the selection procedure according to their own admission criteria, published on their respective websites.
Note: Candidates have to apply for admission into an M.Tech. Programme to the institutes individually but it is mandatory to register for COAP as they will receive admission offers via COAP only.
GATE 2020 CCMT Counselling
The candidates who qualify the GATE 2020 exam are eligible to appear for Counselling through CCMT Counselling for getting admission in PG courses. CCMT is a centralized counselling for admission in all NITs and various other central and state government funded institutes.
The candidates can register for the CCMT (Centralized Counselling for M.Tech./M.Arch./M.Plan) once the GATE results are declared through the official website ccmt.nic.in based on their GATE Scores. Only the candidates who qualify the GATE exam are considered eligible for the counselling.
The candidates who register online and make the necessary fee payments during the specified schedule are eligible to fill choices of institutes for the admission. Once this is done the candidates will be allotted seats in colleges according to their GATE AIR (All India Rank). After the seat is allotted the candidates have to pay the seat allotment fee, which is adjusted against the course fee later.
PSU Recruitment through GATE 2020
There are more than 200 Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) operating in India who employs various methods for recruiting new employees. One such method is recruitment using the GATE score of candidates. However, the GATE score is only used as a preliminary eligibility parameter for PSU recruitment.
Different PSUs use other methods to shortlist the candidates and further narrow down the selection criteria. Some such methods include Group Discussions, Personal Interview. The PSUs announce their recruitment notifications separately, and the candidates must apply to each of them individually.

GATE is conducted by IITs and IISc Bangalore, on a rotational basis. In all, there are 23 Indian Institute of Technology, however, only 7 old IITs conduct the exam along with Indian Institute of Science.

Ans : No, there are talks that GATE will be a compulsory examination, which all engineering graduates will have to clear as an exist test. However, no decision has been taken by the AICTE regarding the same.

About Indian Institute of Technology – IITs
India is home to 23 IITs and these institutes are autonomous public institutes of higher education. The admission in the UG courses are based on JEE Main and Advanced. However, the admisison in the PG courses are based on GATE. Out of the 23 IITs, IIT Kharagpur is the oldest one and there are 5 new IITs that are located in Goa, Jammu, Bhilai, Dharwad, and Dhanbad.
The IITs are termed as the Institute of National Importance.
