How the JAM Papers Changed (2015–2026)
- 2015 to 2019: seven papers, including Biological Sciences (BL). In 2015 candidates could bring their own non-programmable calculator.
- 2020: Biological Sciences was dropped, so JAM 2020 had only six papers.
- 2021 onwards: Economics (EN) was added, giving today’s seven papers. Only an on-screen virtual calculator is allowed.
- Using older papers: the BL papers up to 2019 are still useful for the biology part of Biotechnology, which also tests chemistry, mathematics and physics.
How to Use IIT JAM Previous Year Papers?
- You have 3 minutes a question. 60 questions in 180 minutes sounds generous, but NAT answers have to be typed with no options to check against. Finish Section A in about 75 minutes to leave time for the 20 NAT questions.
- Guess only in Sections B and C. MSQ and NAT carry no negative marks, so attempt every one. In Section A a blind guess among four options averages zero, so mark an MCQ only when you can rule out at least one option.
- Remember MSQ has no partial marks. You must pick every correct option and no wrong one. Check your MSQ answers against the key strictly when you score a paper.
- Solve 2026 back to 2021 first, since they have all seven current papers in the 60-question format. Then use 2015 to 2020 for extra practice in your subject.
- Plan for 14 February 2027. About three and a half months remain. One full paper a week from 2026 backwards covers all 12 years of your subject before the exam.
