Indian Institutes of Technology, Patna releases the list of candidates who are shortlisted for the test/ interview. Candidates who apply for the M.Tech program can check the shortlist from the official website. You can also use the link provided on this page as per the schedule to check the same.
Application Form
Application form was available as per the schedule given above. Candidates are requested to visit the official website to fill and submit application form online for IIT Patna M.Tech Admission 2020. Candidates are advised that they must ensure their eligibility before applying online application form. Candidates are requested to send final submitted application generated online duly signed along with copies of mark sheets/certificates and other testimonials (both sides). The completed application enclosed with the payment details (e-receipt) for application fee and attested copies of mark sheets/certificates and with other necessary enclosures (if applicable) should be sent to The Assistant Registrar (Academics), Indian Institute of Technology Patna, Bihta, Kanpa Road, District – Patna, Bihar, PIN – 801106, to reach on or before its last date. Please mark on the top of the envelope, Application for M.Tech. admission in “ Name of the Specialization”.
No application shall be received after the last day of submission of the hard copy of application by post. The candidates are advised to post well in advance as the Institute will not be responsible for any postal delay. In the absence of receipt of the hard copy, the application shall not be processed.
Note: Those applying for more than one specialization should make separate application for each specialization. They have to pay separate application fee for each specialization.
Application Fee
Application Fee of Rs. 300/- (for Gen/OBC candidates) and Rs.150/- (for ST/SC/PD/Female candidates) must be submitted through online module. A copy of payment e-receipt should be sent through the application form.
IIT Patna M.Tech Admission 2020 Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility Criteria for Admission to M.Tech. Programme:
I. Regular & Full Time: The programme is open to candidates of all categories with Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering / Technology / M Sc or equivalent professional degrees (AMIE, etc.) and having a valid GATE score.
Note: All regular category candidates (except those having B.Tech. degrees from an IIT with a minimum CPI of 8.0) must possess a valid score of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). Candidates seeking admission to M.Tech. Programme of the Institute shall have to possess a minimum of 60% marks (or a CGPA of 6.5 in 10 point scale) for General/OBC categories and 55% marks (or a CGPA of 6.0 in 10 point scale) for SC/ST categories in the final qualifying examination. All selected candidates have to produce the certificate with regard to the marks secured in the final qualifying examination by 31-10-2020. Reservation of Seats is as per Govt. of India rules. OBC (including OBC Minorities) (Non-creamy layer) candidates will have to enclose certificate and self-declaration statement available with the Application form.
Additional Conditions For Candidates Still To Appear In Qualifying Examinations Candidates still to appear in their qualifying degree examinations may also apply, provided they appear in all their qualifying degree examinations and complete all requirements for their degrees before date of registration to M.Tech programme at IIT Patna in July 2020. If selected, such candidates shall be admitted provisionally, and they will have to furnish the results of their qualifying degree examinations latest by 31-10-2020. Further, they must fulfill the minimum requirements of marks/CGPA/CPI, and other conditions like valid GATE score etc., as mentioned under eligibility criteria for respective programmes. Failure to fulfill any of these requirements, shall automatically result in cancellation of admission.
Selection Procedure
Selection is based on performance in GATE and Personal Interview of short-listed candidates. Marks obtained in GATE and in personal interview will have 70% and 30% weightage respectively. Personal interview will be held to test the skills in basic science, engineering, and relevant areas. Personal interviews will be conducted at IIT Patna. The eligibility and the GATE papers for the M.Tech. programmes are given below:
- M.Tech. in Mechatronics : B.Tech./B.E. degree in Mechanical / Production /Aerospace/ Electrical/Electronics & Communication/ Instrumentation Engineering or MSc in
Electronics and Instrumentation and valid GATE score in ME, PI, AE, EE, EC, IN, PH, XE . - M.Tech. in Mathematics and Computing : MSc in Mathematics/Statistics/Mathematics & Computing or Equivalent or B.Tech./B.E. degree in Computer Science/IT/ECE/Aerospace Engineering/Maths & Computing or Equivalent and a valid GATE score in MA, CS, EC.
- M.Tech. in Computer Science & Engineering :B.Tech./B.E. degree in Computer Science/Information Technology and a valid GATE score in CS
- M.Tech. in Communication System Engineering : B.Tech./B.E. degree in Electrical Engineering/Electronics & Communication and a valid GATE score in EC.
- M.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering : B.Tech./B.E. in Aerospace, Aeronautical, Automobile, Production, Manufacturing or Mechanical Engineering and a valid GATE score in AE, ME and PI.
- M.Tech in Civil Engineering : B.Tech/B.E. degree or equivalent in Civil, Infrastructure, Construction Engineering with valid GATE score in CE.
- M.Tech. in Materials Science & Engineering : B.Tech./B.E. degree in Materials, Metallurgical & Materials, Chemical, Ceramics, Polymer/Rubber, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or MSc./Equivalent in Physics, Applied Physics, Chemistry, Applied Chemistry and valid GATE score in paper MT, CH, ME, XE (with Materials Science or Polymer Science and Engineering or Solid Mechanics or Thermodynamics)
- M.Tech in VLSI & Embedded Systems : B.Tech./B.E./B.Sc. (Engineering) degree in
Electrical/Electronics/Communication/Instrumentations Engineering/Computer Science & Engineering with Valid GATE score in one of EE,EC,IN,CS discipline. OR M.Sc. (Physics/Electronics) with valid GATE score in EC, IN.
Note: The Institute reserves the right to call a limited number of candidates for written test or/ and interview, based on performance in GATE/NET, grades/marks in the qualifying examination, etc.
Categories of M.Tech. Students
The Institute admits M.Tech. students under the following categories:
Regular (Full Time)
A candidate in this category is sponsored by a organization R&D organization, academic institution, governmental organization or industry for doing M.Tech. in the Institute on a full-time basis. The applicant must be a regular employee of his/her organization with at least two years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought. He/She will not receive any financial support from the Institute. Sponsorship letter (Form I, available with the application form) must be attached with the duly filled in application form.
Project Staff
This category refers to a student who is working on a sponsored project in the Institute and is admitted then to M.Tech Program to work on a full-time or part-time basis. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. If the project gets completed before the student completes his/her M.Tech Program, his/her category will be converted to PART-TIME Category.
Part-Time
A student in this category is a professionally employed person (including the staff of IIT Patna), who pursues the M.Tech Program, while continuing the duties of his/her service. The Institute does not provide any assistantship to such a student.

Sponsored Candidates
An applicant employed in an industry or any other recognized organization/institution with at least two years of experience is eligible for admission to the M.Tech. programmes provided the applicant is sponsored by the employer. The applicant should have scored at least 60% marks (or a CGPA of 6.5 in 10 point scale) for General/OBC categories and 55% marks (or a CGPA of 6.0 in 10 point scale) for SC/ST Categories in the qualifying degree examination. For sponsored applicants GATE score is not mandatory and they are not eligible for assistantship. Candidate applying for Sponsored Full-Time categories must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least 2(two) years of professional experience in the respective field. Selection of these candidates is based on performance in Written Test and/or Personal Interview of short-listed candidates. Performance in Written test and in Personal interview will be the basis for the selection in M.Tech. programmes.
