Are you preparing for JEE Main 2025? Understanding the exam pattern and marking scheme is essential for effective preparation and smart time management. JEE Main 2025 consists of three papers: Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech), Paper 2A (B.Arch), and Paper 2B (B.Planning). Each paper has a unique structure and question types, so let’s break it all down!

Overview of JEE Main 2025 Papers

JEE Main 2025 offers different papers based on the program you’re applying to:

  • Paper 1: For candidates interested in B.E./B.Tech programs.
  • Paper 2A: For candidates applying for B.Arch (Architecture) programs.
  • Paper 2B: For those interested in B.Planning (Planning) programs.

Each paper has specific subjects, question formats, and marking schemes, which we’ll explore below.

JEE Main 2025 Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech)

Paper 1 is conducted entirely in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode and includes three subjects: Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.

  • Question Types: Both Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Numerical Value Questions.
  • Sections and Marks:
    • Mathematics: 20 MCQs and 5 Numerical Value Questions (100 marks total).
    • Physics: 20 MCQs and 5 Numerical Value Questions (100 marks total).
    • Chemistry: 20 MCQs and 5 Numerical Value Questions (100 marks total).
  • Total Questions: 75 (25 per subject).
  • Total Marks: 300.

Marking Scheme:

  • Correct Answer: +4 marks
  • Incorrect Answer: -1 mark for MCQs; -1 for Numerical Value Questions
  • Unanswered/Marked for Review: No marks

Tip: Ensure your answers for Numerical Value Questions are rounded to the nearest integer.

JEE Main 2025 Paper 2A (B.Arch)

Paper 2A is specifically designed for B.Arch aspirants and includes sections in Mathematics, Aptitude, and Drawing. This paper is a combination of CBT and offline modes:

  • Mathematics: 20 MCQs and 5 Numerical Value Questions (100 marks).
  • Aptitude Test: 50 MCQs (200 marks).
  • Drawing Test: 2 questions that test drawing skills, conducted offline on A4 sheets (100 marks).
  • Total Questions: 77.
  • Total Marks: 400.

Marking Scheme:

  • MCQs and Numerical Value Questions:
    • Correct Answer: +4 marks
    • Incorrect Answer: -1 mark
    • Unanswered/Marked for Review: No marks
  • Drawing Test: Marked out of 100.

Tip: For the Drawing Test, practice sketching detailed and creative designs within the given time. This section can significantly impact your overall score.

JEE Main 2025 Paper 2B (B.Planning)

Paper 2B is intended for B.Planning applicants and is conducted entirely in CBT mode. It consists of three sections:

  • Mathematics: 20 MCQs and 5 Numerical Value Questions (100 marks).
  • Aptitude Test: 50 MCQs (200 marks).
  • Planning-Based Questions: 25 MCQs (100 marks).
  • Total Questions: 100.
  • Total Marks: 400.

Marking Scheme:

  • MCQs and Numerical Value Questions:
    • Correct Answer: +4 marks
    • Incorrect Answer: -1 mark
    • Unanswered/Marked for Review: No marks

Tip: Focus on practicing planning-related topics and map-related questions for the Planning-Based Questions section.

How the Marking Scheme Works

The JEE Main 2025 marking scheme has a negative marking system, so careful answering is essential:

  • +4 Marks for each correct answer.
  • -1 Mark for each incorrect answer in both MCQs and Numerical Value Questions.
  • 0 Marks for questions left unanswered or marked for review.

Merit and Tie-Breaking Rules

JEE Main uses a merit ranking system to determine scores across multiple shifts and exam days, particularly for Paper 1. Here’s how merit and ties are handled:

  1. NTA Score Calculation: Raw scores are converted into NTA scores for each subject (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry) and the total.
  2. Overall Merit: Calculated by merging NTA scores across all shifts and days.
  3. Tie-Breaking Criteria:
    • Higher NTA score in Mathematics.
    • Higher NTA score in Physics.
    • Higher NTA score in Chemistry.
    • Lower proportion of incorrect answers compared to correct answers.
    • If a tie persists, candidates are assigned the same rank.

Tip: Aim for accuracy over attempting every question. Minimizing incorrect answers can improve your overall rank in the event of a tie.

Understanding the Time Duration

The exam duration for JEE Main 2025 varies depending on the paper:

  • Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech): 3 hours (4 hours for eligible PwD/PwBD candidates).
  • Paper 2A (B.Arch): 3 hours (4 hours for eligible PwD candidates).
  • Paper 2B (B.Planning): 3 hours (4 hours for eligible PwD candidates).
  • Combined Papers (B.Arch and B.Planning): 3 hours 30 minutes (4 hours 10 minutes for eligible PwD candidates).

Final Tips for JEE Main 2025 Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme

Understanding the exam pattern and marking scheme is critical to maximizing your score in JEE Main 2025. Here are some final tips:

  1. Practice Both MCQs and Numerical Value Questions: Both question types have unique challenges, so balance your practice.
  2. Manage Time Wisely: Be mindful of time, especially in subjects with Numerical Value Questions.
  3. Focus on Accuracy: Negative marking can impact your score, so only attempt questions you’re confident about.
  4. Prepare for the Drawing Section (for B.Arch): Practice sketching with a focus on creativity and detail.

With a clear understanding of the JEE Main 2025 exam pattern and marking scheme, you’ll be well-equipped to tackle the test confidently. Good luck!
