Kalpit Veerwal from Udaipur, Rajasthan, scored a perfect 360 out of 360 in JEE Main 2017 and took All India Rank 1, the first full score in the exam’s history. He then joined IIT Bombay. In an interview with AglaSem he explained how he prepared. Here is his story, and how JEE Main 2027 differs.

Who is Kalpit Veerwal?
Kalpit Veerwal is the student who scored full marks in JEE Main 2017, a record that later earned him a place in the Limca Book of Records 2018 under education achievements.

What is his family background?
Kalpit comes from a middle-class family in Udaipur, and no one in his family had studied at an IIT. When he spoke to us in 2017, his mother Pushpa Veerwal was a school teacher, his father Pushkar Lal Veerwal worked as a male nurse at Maharana Bhupal Government Hospital in Udaipur, and his elder brother was studying MBBS at AIIMS Jodhpur. His brother was his role model.
How did Kalpit Veerwal prepare for JEE Main?
He prepared steadily over two years rather than with very long hours. In his words:
- “I was studying at Resonance Udaipur since 8th class, but I started preparing for JEE in 11th class.”
- “I studied 5-6 hours daily and more on weekends.”
- “I gave equal time to every subject. There were topics, not subjects, which were difficult, and my teacher helped me in clearing them out.”
- “I ensured that I study and solve the notes given by my teachers on a regular basis.”
- “I was very consistent and regular at my studies. I didn’t waste time in other activities.”
He credits his school director Dr Shailendra Somani and principal Nidhi Maheshwari, and his Resonance teachers Upendra Singh Shekhawat and Jambu Jain (Chemistry), Ravi Ranjan (Physics) and Nitin Sohane (Mathematics).
What is his advice for JEE aspirants?
His key to success fits in one line: “Devote equal time to every subject. Clear your doubts and do not skip school.”
For aspirants he added: “Start preparing as if you love studies and not like it is a burden. Just work hard and you will achieve success.” On coaching, he felt it makes the goal easier to reach because teachers guide you, but his own results came from focused work in class and regular revision of his teachers’ notes.
How is JEE Main 2027 different from Kalpit’s exam?
JEE Main has changed since 2017, and a score of 360 is no longer possible because Paper 1 is now marked out of 300. The table shows the pattern in the JEE Main 2027 information bulletin.

How can you use his tips for JEE Main 2027?
- Plan a weekly timetable that gives Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics equal time, as Kalpit did.
- Keep a list of doubts by topic and clear it with a teacher every week.
- Revise your class and coaching notes regularly instead of collecting new books.
- Solve JEE Main previous year papers from the last three years under exam timing.

- In the last month, revise and test rather than start new topics.
