Top Medical Entrance Exams Explained

Most medical aspirants only need to know a handful of exams. Here is what each one is for and who should take it.

NEET UG 2027

NEET UG is the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It is the single entrance for MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BSMS and BVSc & AH across India, including AIIMS, JIPMER and AFMC, so if you want any of these courses after Class 12, this is the exam to take. It replaced the old All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT), and separate AIIMS and JIPMER MBBS exams are no longer held. Seats are then filled through MCC and state counselling using your NEET rank.

NEET PG 2027

NEET PG is conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) for admission to MD, MS and PG Diploma courses, plus DNB seats. It is open to MBBS graduates who complete their internship by the cut-off date in the bulletin. Almost every medical college in the country admits through it, except the institutes that use INI CET. The National Medical Commission has proposed a National Exit Test (NExT) to eventually take over this role; until NExT is formally notified, NEET PG remains the route.

INI CET 2027

INI CET is conducted by AIIMS New Delhi for PG admission to the Institutes of National Importance: the AIIMS institutes, JIPMER, PGIMER Chandigarh, NIMHANS and SCTIMST. It covers MD, MS, MDS and the six-year DM and MCh courses at these institutes. It is held twice a year, for the January and July sessions, and most serious PG aspirants take both INI CET and NEET PG.

NEET MDS 2027

NEET MDS is the NBEMS exam for Master of Dental Surgery admission at dental colleges across India. BDS graduates who have completed their internship by the notified cut-off date should take it. MDS seats at AIIMS and the other Institutes of National Importance are filled through INI CET instead.

INI SS 2027 and NEET SS

These are super-speciality entrances for doctors who already hold an MD, MS or DNB. INI SS is conducted by AIIMS New Delhi for DM and MCh seats at the Institutes of National Importance, while NEET SS, conducted by NBEMS, covers DM, MCh and DrNB seats elsewhere. The feeder speciality you hold decides which DM or MCh courses you can apply for.

FMGE

The FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) is a screening test, not an admission test. NBEMS conducts it for Indian citizens and OCI holders who earned their primary medical degree outside India and want to register with the NMC or a State Medical Council. Students planning to study MBBS abroad should understand it before they go.

State NEET Counselling

States do not hold their own MBBS entrance any more; they admit through NEET UG scores. Each state runs counselling for its state quota and private college seats, for example Maharashtra NEET Counselling, Karnataka NEET Counselling by KEA and UP NEET Counselling by DGME UP. Many states also run PG counselling on NEET PG scores, such as Karnataka NEET PG Counselling and Maharashtra NEET PG Counselling. Find your state in the list above.

Which Entrance Exam for Medical After 12th?

Use this table to match your goal to the right exam. If you are searching for “MBBS ke liye entrance exam” or “BAMS ke liye entrance exam”, the answer for both is NEET UG.

Medical Entrance Exams Other Than NEET

For MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and BVSc & AH in India, there is no alternative to NEET UG. The old AIIMS MBBS and JIPMER MBBS exams have been discontinued, and the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) also shortlists through NEET, so the “armed forces medical entrance exam” is NEET UG followed by AFMC’s own selection steps.

In Kerala, medical and allied courses are allotted through CEE Kerala using NEET UG scores, so KEAM registration is needed for those courses but the rank comes from NEET. Check Kerala NEET Counselling for details.

MBBS, BDS and BHMS Admission Without NEET

To be clear: you cannot get a recognised MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BSMS or BVSc & AH seat in India without qualifying NEET UG. This applies to government, private and deemed universities, and to management, NRI and institutional quota seats as well. Any agent offering “direct admission without NEET” for these courses should be treated with caution.

If you want a healthcare career without NEET, consider courses that some institutions fill on Class 12 marks or their own test, such as B.Sc in allied health sciences, physiotherapy, medical lab technology, nutrition or nursing in certain states. Rules differ by state and college, so check each course’s official admission notice. Admission on merit is never guaranteed.

NEET Admission and State Counselling

Clearing NEET UG gives you a rank; the seat comes through counselling. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) fills the All India Quota share of government seats plus seats at AIIMS, JIPMER, central and deemed universities, and AFMC. The remaining state quota seats and most private college seats are filled by each state’s counselling authority, which usually has its own domicile rules and separate registration.

Register for both MCC and your home state’s counselling. PG works the same way: MCC handles the All India Quota for NEET PG, while states run counselling for their share. Every state page in the list above shows the counselling authority, rounds and previous cut-offs.

Eligibility for Medical Entrance Exams

• NEET UG: Class 12 (or appearing) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology and English, with the minimum aggregate in PCB set by the NMC (lower for reserved categories). You must be at least 17 years old by 31 December of the admission year. Mathematics is not required.
• NEET PG and INI CET: MBBS from a recognised college with the internship completed by the cut-off date in the bulletin.
• NEET MDS: BDS with the internship completed by the cut-off date.
• NEET SS and INI SS: MD, MS or DNB in the feeder speciality for the DM or MCh course.
• Paramedical tests: usually Class 12 with Science, often with Biology; course-wise rules vary.

Domicile, age and reservation rules differ, so always confirm on the exam’s own page before applying.

Medical Exam Pattern at a Glance

• NEET UG: pen-and-paper test with multiple-choice questions in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology), with negative marking for wrong answers. It is offered in English, Hindi and several regional languages.
• NEET PG, INI CET and NEET MDS: computer-based tests with multiple-choice questions from the whole MBBS or BDS curriculum, including clinical subjects.
• Paramedical tests: usually objective questions from Class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

How to Prepare for Medical Entrance Exams

1. Start with the official syllabus for your exam and list every chapter.
2. Make NCERT Class 11 and 12 Biology your base for NEET UG; read it line by line, including diagrams.
3. Practise Physics numericals and Chemistry reactions daily, since these decide close ranks.
4. Solve previous years’ papers (linked below) under exam timing to learn the question style.
5. Take full-length mock tests regularly and review every mistake.
6. For NEET PG and INI CET, revise high-yield subjects in cycles and practise image-based and clinical questions.
7. Keep the last month for revision and mock analysis, not new topics.

Coaching is optional. Many students clear NEET with self-study, a fixed timetable and honest mock analysis.
