Submission of Application Form
Before submitting the Application Form, applicants are asked to read carefully and thoroughly the Application Form, the OMR Application Form and the instructions for filling up the Application Form. Before filling in the Application Form, check your eligibility regarding minimum required age, educational qualification, experience, etc., for the Programmes applied for.
The applicants should send the filled-in application form along with a Demand Draft for Rs. 500/- (Application cost). The DD should be drawn in favour of ‘Tamil Nadu Open University’ payable at Chennai.
The applicants need to submit the attested photocopies of the following documents along with the filled-in application form as given below:
- Birth Certificate or S.S.L.C. Certificate (as a proof for date of birth)
- Community Certificate
- SSLC & PUC, HSC, UG, PG and M.Phil. Mark Statements and Convocation Certificates
- Service Certificate and No Objection Certificate in original from the Head of the Institution where the candidate is employed indicating the date of appointment if the applicants wish to pursue the research programme under part-time stream.
Incomplete/late application forms and also application forms with false information, if any will be summarily rejected without any intimation to the candidates concerned. Candidates are, therefore, advised to fill in the relevant columns carefully and submit the application form to The Controller of Examinations, Tamil Nadu Open University, No.577, Anna Salai, Saidapet, Chennai – 600 015.
Candidate willing to register for M.Phil./Ph.D. should have passed a Master Degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the master degree, in the discipline concerned with not less than 55% of marks. Also, the Candidate should have gone through the pattern of study in 10+2+3+2 pattern or equivalent in that order. These degrees should have been obtained from this University or any other University recognized as equivalent thereto.
A relaxation 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer) / Differently-Abled and other categories of Candidates as per the decision of the TNOU based on the orders of the UGC and the Government of Tamil Nadu from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master degree prior to 19th September, 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent Grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying exact marks without including the grace mark procedures. The applicants shall produce necessary documents in support of their claim.
The conditions for admission prescribed under the regulations in respect of the M.Phil./Ph.D. programme should be strictly followed. All Candidates should have passed their PG Degree course as per UGC / AICTE / NCTE / Any Other regulating Body’s regulations.
Admission Procedure of Tamil Nadu Open University
- Selection procedure for Ph.D.
As per the UGC regulations, the University will normally admit Ph.D. students through an Entrance Test conducted twice a year in January and July sessions and respective admissions will be made accordingly. However, the announcement for the admissions will be given subject to the vacancy condition only. The admission shall be made purely on merit basis: 50% of marks are from the qualifying examination, i.e. PG Degree and another 50% based on the entrance test. The Candidate should take the examination only in the subject for which he/she has applied for admission into the Ph.D. programme. The University reserves the rights to advertise/admit or both due to administrative reasons.
- Admission Procedure for M.Phil.
The University will admit M.Phil. Candidates through an Entrance Test conducted once in a year in July and admission will be made accordingly. The admission shall be made purely on merit basis: 50% of marks from the qualifying examination, i.e. PG Degree and another 50% based on the entrance test. The candidate should take the examination only in the subject for which he/she has applied for admission into the M.Phil. Programme.
Entrance test & Interview
For admission into the M.Phil. Programme, an entrance test, and interview will be compulsory for all the eligible applicants which will be conducted at the University Headquarters. The entrance test will comprise of 50 Objective type questions and each question carries one mark.
Following the entrance test, based on ranking, the qualified candidates shall be shortlisted and called for an interview by their respective School. The interview shall carry 10 marks.
The rank list will be prepared based on the following procedures
- 50% weightage to the qualifying PG examination
- 40% weightage to the entrance test
- 10% weightage to the Interview
